At The Lake, Morning,Daily Painting

"At The Lake"
(Lake Okeechobee)
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
Not Available

Bright morning sun, birds singing, and flowers blooming. There is usually great contrast in the mornings. I exaggerated the colors in the sky, taking the colors from just slightly earlier. This is painted from photos I took at Lake Okeechobee.

Enjoy!

Gotcha, Realistic Impressionism, Daily Work, Wildlife, Heron,

"Gotcha"
16 x 20 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$900.00 plus shipping
(ready to frame)

This is a tri-colored heron. He was fishing close to where I was painting a couple of weeks ago. He didn't seem to mind me at all. I took a roll of pictures and got about four really good shots. I combined a couple of them for this painting.

Overcome, Plein Air, Impressionism, Palms

"Overcome"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on canvas

SOLD

Went out with the Treasure Coast Plein Air Painters group yesterday. It was fun. We were painting at White City Park.

When I saw this little palm hanging out, I had to paint it. I love these palms because you know at one time they were blown over. The growth pattern tells me that at one time this tree started to turn and grow back up even after it was blown down. It reminds me of all the times we have to change course in life, and overcome hardships. We don't have to let things become an excuse to destroy us. Just like this tree is more interesting because it kept going, so are we.

Surpassing, impressionism, botanical, water, lily pads

"Surpassing"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on gessoed board
Not Available

I was thinking about peace as I painted this. Sometimes things are too painful to think about, or too hard to understand. When we pray, there is peace of mind, and we don't have to have the answers, just faith that God will work it all out like he says he will.

Last Watch, Impressionism Seascape, Sunset

"Last Watch"
24 x 36 inches
Acrylic on canvas

I hid an angel in the clouds. The sand was fun, lots of texture and contrast. I also like the way these colors play off of each other.
This is a commissioned painting.

At Lake Istokpoga, Impressionism, Plein Air

"At Lake Istokpoga"
5 x 7 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

This is the third painting I did Tuesday out at Lake Istokpoga (iss-ta-po-ga). This small painting has a very simple composition, yet it works well. I was very happy with the lighting and the movement. I did it alla prima (all in one session).

Lake Istokpoga Too, Plein Air, bird, heron

"Lake Istokpoga Too"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

This is the second painting from Tuesday morning. I added the great blue heron when I got home. He had been sitting at the end of the dock most of the morning, then he just took off!

Lake Istokpoga, Plein Air Landscape, Impressionism

"Lake Istokpoga"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

I headed north of here, toward Sebring yesterday morning. (This lake is pronounced iss-ta-poe-ga.) It was so nice out that I stayed until lunch time. I did three paintings, which I will be posting over the next couple of days.

The wind was kind to keep me cool. There were lots of trees for shade, and so many birds posing for me, that I had to keep stopping for more pictures! What a great morning.
I added the birds after I got home, I just couldn't leave them out! smile.

Resting Place, impressionism landscape, birds, barn

"Resting Place"
8 x10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
Not Available

Hundreds of egrets just kept coming to roost in this old tree. It was an amazing sight! By the time they all found a spot the tree looked like it was nothing but white dots. I added the barn for interest and made the pond a little larger to repeat the feeling of movement and balance.

Waiting, Impressionism Landscape, Bird

"Waiting"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas board
SOLD
While I was out painting yesterday morning I took some good pictures of this great blue heron. He was hard to see at first because he did not move at all. I thought he was just a rock!
I really got lost in all those rocks, just kept adding more and more thick paint. It was fun.

Little Blue, Plein Air, Birds

"Little Blue"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on gessoed board

The water level is very low, and the rocks make interesting patterns. Usually we just get a few of the rocks showing above the water. The little blue heron stayed off to the far right most of the morning, and just before I finished up, the water turkey (anhinga) poked his head up a few times (near the bottom).
I love all the colors and the rhythm in this painting, but I may go back and tone down some of the rocks. Especially on the left as that will direct your eyes to the right.

Partly Cloudy, Daily Painting, Palms

"Partly Cloudy"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

I did this painting from memory. It is really fun to just make it up based on previous plein air works, and previous studies. This is from my back view again. I have done these in different color schemes, and at different times of the day. Depending on which direction I look I get a different set of palms. I really like the way this one has turned out. The sun is coming through all the clouds, and the birds are headed out toward the lake (which is on the other side of the dike.)

Sandhill Cranes, Impressionism birds, wildlife

"Sandhill Cranes"
8 x 10 inches
acrylic on hardboard
Sold

These birds mate for life, and around here you see the same pair raise their two chicks in the same area every year. Usually one of the chicks will not survive. The young sandhills will stay with their parents for a year or so.
This family stays near the big lake. The last time I painted a scene at the lake, they came very close and sang up a storm! They have bright red tufts on the top of their head, and they have a beautiful ruffle of feathers on their rump. I took some great photos -- this is painted from those photos.
Sometimes Sandhills are very brownish gray, and sometimes they are a very light bluish grey.
I have seen them in large flocks of more than a hundred birds! I guess that is when they are migrating.

Class Clown, Horse Portrait, Impressionism

"Class Clown"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
NOT AVAILABLE

I just couldn't resist this little character! He kept turning his head back to see me. This was a much harder view than I anticipated. I finally got all the angles right to make his head look like it was tipping . . . He had the most curious eyes and long, long lashes! Enjoy!

Lock Closed, Historical Plein Air, Drought

"Lock Closed"
8 x 10 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on hardboard

This morning I painted the boat channel, which has been closed most of this year. The water used to come up around the rocks. Every bit of the grass here was covered in water. Now the little puddle on the right is barely ankle deep. The tall grasses near the middle of the rock way are taller than a person while standing on the rocks.
This is the same area that I painted last November: "Over the Dyke."
Then I painted it again after the drought had set in,

Great Blue, realistic impressionism, heron,

"Great Blue"
9 x 12 inches
(Ready to frame)
Acrylic on canvas board
(canvas mounted on archival hardboard)

This is a take off from a painting I did in May called "Hidden Truth." I zoomed in closer and used a different photo for the bird. I wanted a great blue heron instead of a white egret. I reversed the whole setting but still kept the lighting from the right. Worked in thin dark layers first, then added the thick bright colors and details. I like the strength of this composition: the heron is off center, and the shadows behind him set him off.

Hope and Joy, Horses, Mare and foal, Realistic impressionism

"Hope and Joy"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas board
Not available

Please email me for information about a portrait of your livestock or pet . . .
I love the soft textures of fur, and the glow of warm colors in this small painting. The miracle of a new life, and the closeness of a protective mother give this painting many implications. Even the names of the horses imply a touch from our Father.
