Miss Molly, pet portrait

"Miss Molly"

Just finished this little commissioned portrait in memory of sweet Molly.

I love her soft fluffy fur.  I added a hint of angels in the wispy clouds and used sunset colors to compliment her markings.

Faithful Friend, animal portrait

"Faithful Friend"

I've been working on this little painting for over a month! Mostly, I had a hard time finding time to get in the studio, but I loved every minute of creating his portrait. This beautiful fellow belongs to a friend of ours that lives down the road.  He is always right by his master's side and waits patiently every time they come over.

Please email me if you would like an original animal portrait! I have a price list by size.

Sugar, white cat, mixed media

"Sugar"
©Fawn McNeill, Dec. 2018

Beautifully strange colored eyes. Sugar made herself at home under my gallery in the spring of 2018.  My students loved her and called her Snowflake.  She would dash in each time the door opened.

I felt sorry for her and fed her because she was so skinny and nursing three kittens.  She looked like a kitten herself!  I'm sure it was her first litter.  She was wild and skittish, but she warmed up to us a little.  We found homes for her kittens and I had her fixed.

I created this painting for my students as an example for one of our classes.  We made the eyes bigger than normal and played up the fluffy fur.  It was a fun class!

White is a challenge for young students because they don't want to add shadows.  (The cat had to be painted light blue, beige, and pink before the white was added over the top so the fur would show up.)

Later, I went back and added more details and a few beads above her eye and one on the collar.  It was one of the first in my new mixed-media series and I wasn't too sure how much to add or whether I would like it or not.  The custom blue frame was a perfect match!

I'm not sure why it never got posted. I had it on display at some shows as 'not for sale' and then finally put a price on it at the Unique Boutique when I started selling some of my mixed-media pieces. I think subconsciously that I just wanted to keep it. I've enjoyed the memories it carries of my little gallery and teaching center before the pandemic shut it all down.

Fluffy, bunny portrait, knife painting

"Fluffy"

This is a take off of "Peter" which I did years ago.
I thought I would add mixed media and thick layers of impasto, but I stopped here because I really liked it and didn't want to mess it up by adding too much.  It is much harder to undo mixed media than it is to change knife paintings.

I apologize for the glare on the images. I usually do my photography with a professional camera, but these were taken with my cell phone, because they were spoken for before I had a chance to get a better capture. The glare is in a different place on each image, so you can get a good overall idea.  (Images never capture the way it truly looks in person because the camera can't capture the subtle changes in values and hues.)

I made the little custom frame for it.  I mitered, joined and then embellished it.  I love the little bit of gold lace on the inside lip.  It adds a nice texture and enhances the painting too.

Time Out, boxer dog and butterfly

 "Time Out"

Started this as a portrait of a friend's boxer.  It didn't turn out too well at first, so I scrapped it.  I changed the colors and then added a butterfly.  (It is always better to start over if things aren't working out, then I can play around with the one I wasn't happy with).    I like it much better now. It will make nice greeting cards.

Maggie Mae, yellow labrador, animal portrait

"Maggie Mae"
24 x 30 inches
Acrylic on canvas
SOLD

In  memory of Maggie.  Combined different images to put this custom painting together.  The rocks were very challenging! Wanted them to look just like the rocks on her wall.  So many wonderful contrasts: soft fur and hard rocks, pink azaleas and green grass... Yellow butterflies for added accents, just love co-creating custom orders with my clients!

Chloe and Sweetie, macaw and green-cheek parrot

"Chloe and Sweetie"

So excited to finally get to post this!  It was a custom painting for a Christmas present, so I didn't want to spoil the surprise!

Used different photos of these two, and combined them into one setting.  Had to figure out the size relationship between them... Love the colors and simulated textures.

Green Parrot, pet portrait

"Green Parrot"
©Fawn McNeill 2008

I drew this guy freehand, then did an under painting in black and white. This was a study in complimentary colors.  Corrected quite a few errors as I painted the under painting. Then I went in with green and red glazes (added Liquitex semi-gloss medium and varnish to make a transparent glaze) after the under painting was dry. It made him glow.  Adding the red tuft on his head was fun too.

Black Jack, cat portrait, animal portrait

"Black Jack"

This is a custom painting.  Had fun playing up the background and reflecting it in Jack's fur.  Jack's humans are in the movie industry, so I thought this would reference theatrical lighting quite nicely!

Peppys Picasso, animal portrait

"PEPPYS PICASSO"

Finally finished up this painting, which I started before I had to have major surgery. Had a month of being in bed, and then trying to re-open my gallery, so it has been one of those things that I kept working on in between everything else. It really turned out nice, however.
Peppy is a two time world champion in the western reining events. He has won other honors as well.  He is a magnificent horse. I think I have done justice to him.

Just before Christmas, my appendix ruptured and encapsulated my ovary.  I went around for over two weeks with pain, thinking It was my ovary. I was diagnosed with an ovarian tumor and cysts, which are common. My ovary was swollen to the size of an orange because all the poisons went into my female organs.  Needless to say, when they went in to take out the tumor they found a mess! A large sticky ball of goo instead of a tumor.  They took out everything. Ended up with a hysterectomy and an appendectomy, and they cleaned out all the poisons.  I am fortunate to be alive, as often the toxins kill people.  I am two months into recovery, and still battle the pain from it, although it is not nearly as severe.

(Click here to read more about the new studio and the cool dreams I had just before my appendix ruptured.)

I thank the Lord for giving me a new lease on life, and I look forward to what he has for me next!

First Time For Everthing, foal running

"First Time for Everything"

Got great pictures of this new colt running around the paddock his first time out. He had a hard time getting here, and his mother almost didn't make it. One of the foal's legs came through the rectum and the other got hung up backwards.  The mare could not move around very well after being sown back together. They were kept in a stall until she could walk some.

When he took off bucking and running around, she would call him back each time.  He would catch his breath and then take off again! It was way too cool to watch. He lives next door to me.

I was mostly interested in the backlighting and how it set him off.  The dust kicking up was also something I wanted to try to capture.  I exaggerated the background and moved things around to create more contrast because the sunset blurred so much of it out.  I think it is one of best works!

Mud Bath, animal portrait, pig covered in mud

"Mud Bath"

I had a blast splashing mud on this guy! I free-handed him onto the canvas and had him all pretty and white, but I just could not help myself. He his a pig after all! So I started with a few little spots of mud, and next thing you know, well, he was covered in it! Then I had to go back and clean him up a little so you could still see his eyes.....Too much fun.

The original is created on gallery wrap canvas. The painting continues on the sides, so framing is optional.

ICU, great horned owl

"ICU"

This is a custom order. I used pictures that my clients sent to me, but the flash had made the eyes all white and reflective, so I did research to create the eyes. The owl was injured and they took it to a refuge to see if they could save it. Sadly he didn't make it.
