Early Light, palette knife painting

"Early Light"

About This Painting:
Did this little one alla prima (all in one session). It makes for thick paint and lovely texture. The paint creates exciting patterns as it blends under the knife. I painted it from memory. It is always fun to paint with a knife. You never know exactly what you will get!
Ready to frame.

Media: acrylic on hardboard
Size: 6 in X 6 in (15.2 cm X 15.2 cm)

Hang Over, Abstract, Palette knife painting

"Hang Over"
About This Painting:
It started as a study of split contrasts. I was just playing with the palette knife and lots of thick paint. This is a fun approach. this time it was based completely on my mood, and the mixed emotions I was struggling with at the time. Very quickly the painting began to look like flowers hanging over the water.
Because of the abstract quality it has, almost like blurred vision, I gave it the humorous title, which made me laugh.

Sunny Skies, landscape, ocean

"Sunny Skies"
Sold
About This Painting:
Palette knife painting. Alla prima, or all at once, which makes for nice interactions with the paint. It also adds lots of texture. But I was mostly interested in the color contrast. Palette knife painting has to be my favorite way to paint these days. Keeps things unpredictable, and exciting. the painting becomes more about the paint and the color than it does about the subject.
Ready to frame.

Be Mine Again, palette knife painting

"Be Mine Again"

This palette knife painting was created alla prima ( all at once). Purple is often used for the unknown, and of course red is for passion. It was intense and I wanted to let it pour out.
No greater love can anyone give than to give up their life for us. Jesus accepts us as we are, broken, wounded, unholy, and selfish. Yet he loves us, and pursues us, and never gives up on us. He wants us for himself, and to reunite us with our Creator. Faith can heal wounded hearts, and the love you find is not like anything a human can give.

Red Rocks, sunset, beach

Made this up for fun. I started with a thin strip of purple in the middle and worked out in both directions with rainbow colors. Then added the clouds, rocks and waves. It was painted alla prima.

Iris Abstract, O'keeffe flower

"Iris Abstract"

8.5 x 11.75 inches
watercolor on acid free paper
Ready to frame

$475.00

I have always been inspired by Georgia O'keeffe's flowers. I thought this one would look great in watercolors. I changed the colors somewhat and let the composition flow the way it wanted as I painted it in without drawing it first. I used to have my students at the high school do this type of art history study. Of course they had to do a report too!

Dawn's Light, young palm tree

"Dawn's Light"
5 x 7 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
Sold

I painted this alla prima, all in one session. Wet-in-wet, fast and loose . . . so fun to do. Very impressionistic. I saw this little palm tree glowing in the early morning sun, the shadows where intensified by the light. It was so beautiful to me. It reminds me of that feeling when you are out camping and it is hard to make things out with all the shadows, then the sun eats away at the darkness and even seems to bite through some of the objects in its path.
NEWS FLASH:
The first Daily Painters book is out! MY ART is featured in the middle.

Ladies in Waiting 2, water lilies

"Ladies in Waiting 2"
5 x 7 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
SOLD
I really liked "Ladies in Waiting," from a few days ago, so I wanted to try it again in a palette knife painting. I pushed the dark and light values for stronger contrast, but mostly enjoyed painting the lily pads! I did this painting alla prima (all at once), which makes it have a nice thick texture and interesting mixtures of colors. The palette knife creates a challenge for me when applied wet over wet, but that forces the paint to interact.

Peace To You, palette knife painting

"Peace to You"
6 x 6 inches
acrylic on hardboard
NOT AVAILABLE

Did this quick little palette knife painting a few days ago, just before we left. It is alla prima. I always enjoy the wet-in-wet effect of painting all in one session.
We got back from Gainesville early, as the radio-surgery procedure was canceled for my husband. He has severe adverse reactions to local anesthetics and some other complications. Now a new surgery is scheduled for a shunt in his head, which will relieve excess fluids from his brain.
A little scary. We have to wait two more weeks!
Thanks for stopping by.

Down the Road, sunset, palms

"Down the Road"
6 x 6 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

Sold

Just down the road from my house there are groups of cypress and palm trees. They make very interesting shapes. The sun was starting to go down when I took some pictures of these trees. I was interested in the one leaning, so it was the starting point, but then I got caught up in the shadow shapes in the grass too.
There is a song that was on my mind as I painted this, and part of it says, " Somewhere down the road you'll find the answers to your questions, and His mighty arms waiting for you . . ."

We will be away for a few days, my husband is going to have radio-surgery this week. We are looking forward to a full recovery! I'll post something when we get back.

Big Lake Sunset, palette knife painting

"Big Lake Sunset"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

I am getting fond of the palette knife, I love the texture it creates! This painting was done alla prima, or all at once, to get that thick overlapping quality. It is often the goal, but seldom happens that way.  Painting over dry paint doesn't give the same mixtures of color.
I got out for a walk at the lake a few days ago, and took some nice pictures of the sunset. The sun had just slipped down below the water, so the colors were still bright and inspiring.

Wild Clusters, orange flowers

"Wild Clusters"
6 x 6 inches
Acrylic on canvas

NOT AVAILABLE

I painted these from memory, you see them around the fence posts and along some paths around here. I like the impressionistic brush strokes and the thick texture of the flowers against the smooth soft background. It creates a nice contrast as well as the warm and cool contrast.

Enjoy!

"Opposing Forces" palette knife abstract painting

"Opposing Forces"
Set of 2, 6 x 6 inches each
Acrylic on hardboard
ready to frame

No deep hidden message for these paintings, at least not that I am aware of. I just wanted to push around some strong colors, and take a break from representational art. So here is what came about:
I started with swirls of thick bold color, and then decided to go with cool colors playing against the warm colors. I really got lost in the moment. After I finished the first one, I decided to create its companion. They could be hung together or separately, but I am only offering them as a set.

Escape, abstract, palette knife painting

"Escape"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
$950.00
ready to frame
Lots of thoughts going through my mind. Wanted to create the feeling of a struggle or battle.
Life seems to come crashing down on us so easily, and we feel like we are going to drown in the sorrow and negative forces. But God promises a way of escape, and always makes a way for us, especially when it seems like there is no way out.
The horse symbolizes us in the storms we face. He is determined to overcome the trials, and so he does!
The light on the other side is where God made a way for us to find rest from our struggles. Jesus made that way for us.
This painting was done alla prima, or all at once. It has thick swirls of paint, applied with a painting knife instead of a brush. This technique makes some interesting and cool effects.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man, God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (First Corinthians 10:13)

Quenching the Darts, palette knife painting

Quenching the Darts"
10 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
framing is optional, sides are painted
There is a lot of back ground and life stories that go with this, so I will try to keep it short.
Life has always thrown hardships my way: The death of my father as a young child, abuse from step fathers, moving every year, running away as a teenager, and foster homes for three years. I thought as an adult I could make life good, be a good person, and live a "normal life"-- whatever that is. But life continued to throw more hardships my way: a husband that lied and cheated and ran off with another woman after thirteen years of giving it my all (leaving me with two sons to raise), a second husband that abused me (whom I divorced after a year and a half) and now in the midst of finally living my dreams and being a professional artist -- I find my self in a world of doubt, strife and unbelief. My husband is very old school, and I have to fight for my rights on a regular basis. he has been ill lately, and taking his frustration out on me verbally. Sometimes I just want to give up altogether and run away. (Which helps me understand my mother and her frequent moves to a new state or even to an island in the pacific!)
Anyway, back to the painting, this started as a release of pent up anger at my husband, whose quick temper is hard for me to deal with sometimes. Next I saw an angel begin to form, but the wings began to look like a dove, the symbol of peace, and I knew it was me in agony on my knees, again. "How do I stay positive when all the world is so negative?" Sometimes I just can't stop the tears. So this painting poured out of my wounded soul. I have always found hope on my knees.

In the Bible it says to put on God's armor:
His peace, His helmet of salvation, His righteousness . . . so you can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one, for our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of darkness in high places.
(Ephesians 6)

Lavender Sway 4, Alla prima

"Lavender Sway 4"
8 x 10 inches
acrylic on hardboard

SOLD

This is my second painting in this new blue series. I just finished up a limited palette challenge in greens, so now I want to play around with blues. In this analogous painting I have used Blue-violet, Blue, and Blue-green with black and white for varying the values. This is similar to one I did called "Lavender Sway 3" It had more red-violets and some butterflies.
This is alla prima: fast and fun, lots of thick paint all applied in one session, so the colors mix wet-in-wet. It has a painterly, loose look to it.
I really like the abstract quality of the shapes and rhythm in this painting, as well as the cool temperature of the blue tones.
Enjoy!
