2 Egrets, wildlife, impressionism

"2 Egrets"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
ready to frame
With all the flooding and and rising streams, the birds are in heaven! It is migratory season anyway, and we get a steady stream of birds this time of year. But the amount of egrets is unbelievable! hundreds at a time! I painted just two of them here, but hope to do a flock of them soon.
By the way, Lake Okeechobee is up to it's average depth now for the first time in over two years! The pier actually has water under it now. Such a lovely site. I hope to paint it soon too.

Thanks for looking!

At the Lake Again, Bald Eagle,

"At The Lake Again"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

While I was at the lake I saw this eagle on the shore. He was feasting on his catch and then he flew around for a while! I got a few pictures of him, most where blurry. But I wanted to capture the memory anyway.
I love the way the clouds are dancing around.

Sunset with Rocks, Daily Painting

"Sunset Rocks"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

This is a study of the rocks. I was fascinated with all the reflected colors. The rocks looked blue and purple! I started out just painting the colors in bold broad strokes, and thought about just leaving it that way. Then I decided to refine it and add the details, which I absolutely love to do! I painted this from photos I took last week of Nubbin's Slough.

Thanks for looking!

This painting has been altered, please see "Sunset Rocks" on 12-5-11 for updated version. Added an angel and birds. ( Interesting : the photography here is done in cool, outdoor lighting, the photography on the updated painting is done indoors with warmer light.....quite a big difference.)

Lake Sunset, Plein Air Painting

"Lake Sunset"
6 x 8 inches
Acrylic on canvas panel
(ready to frame)

Stole an hour at sunset tonight. Rarely do I get to paint on location in the evening. In fact this is the first one I have done outside at sunset! The colors were so vibrant, I really didn't do it justice. But it felt good to get out there!
This is at Nubbin's Slough. The water is coming up some, but there is still a lot of land where it used to be all under water. It has been about a year and a half now that Lake Okeechobee has been so low. I added the birds when I got home.
Enjoy!

Late Morning, Plein Air Painting

"Late Morning"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
$625.00

Plein air painting (on location) done at Lake Okeechobee. This is down by the boat ramp at Lock 7. Can't even see the lake anymore. It is on the other side of all this brush. This little boat channel will take you around the brush and into the lake, but not too many people go out anymore. Air-boats seem more popular now to get through the shallow water. I did see some small flat boats.

The Snack Bar, egret, heron, wildlife art by Fawn

"The Snack Bar"
5 x 7 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
SOLD

Some people call the great egret a 'great white egret,' and some people call the blue heron a 'great blue heron.' Either way they are very large birds and very common around here. They are close to four feet tall, and have a massive wing span. I take pictures of them often and love to include them in my paintings.
This painting was done alla prima, which means I did it all at once. I love the using thick paint with fast applications. That gives it that wet in wet look, which in acrylics is harder to achieve than in oils.

Lake Lilies, lily pads with flowers, daily painting

"Lake Lilies"
© Fawn McNeill 2007

I just love this vertical format. I did one titled "Boat Trail" not too long ago from this same area of Lake Okeechobee. Created this from photos I took before the drought. I loved going out and looking at miles of these wonderful water lilies.

The canvas wraps around and the sides are painted so framing is optional.

Winter Marsh, Egrets, Lake Port Florida, Daily Painting

"Winter Marsh"
9 x 12 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on Hardboard
$675.00
I am still working on some things I was reminded of at my workshop a week ago. I used a reversed "C" shape to plan out the composition and I tried to use some less intense colors away from the focal point. I like the effect: as if the sun is trying to come through on the right and the birds are about to fly out of the picture!

Lake Side, sunlit shell, daily painting, by Fawn

"Lake Side"
5 x 7 inches
Acrylic on canvas panel
NOT AVAILABLE
This is a fun little shell that was floating along and glowing in the sun. One of the shore birds here had just cleaned this one out.
Busy week, getting ready for Thanksgiving and all. Thought I would do a few small paintings this week. I may not get one posted everyday, but I will try. I will be out at a workshop on Saturday, so most likely wont have one that day.

Boat Trail, Lake Okechobee Lily pads, Daily Painting

"Boat Trail"
12 x 6 x 1.5 inches
Acrylic on Gallery-wrap canvas
(Sides are painted)
SOLD

This is about the in-between stuff. Instead of the lily pads being the main thing, I wanted the water in-between them to be the main thing. Does that make sense? I remember looking out at the endless lily pads and feeling like they just go on forever.

Up Date: This painting won a purchase award at Sebring's Art Festival! (11/10/07)

Rim Water, Sunrise Landscape, Old oak, Plein Air

"Rim Water"
(Lake Okeechobee)
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas

This is another older painting that I did a few years ago, I have added the egrets and a few more highlights to it. My photography is better now too, much more true to the right colors, and contrast. Of course, each monitor varies some in color too. My camera tends to throw off a blue cast, so I am learning how to adjust for that and get a better image.

I am glad I painted it when I did, because this old tree was taken out and now a huge house is in it's place. Sad face here.

I have to go back to the courthouse today. Jury duty . . .

Thanks for looking!

At The Lake, Morning,Daily Painting

"At The Lake"
(Lake Okeechobee)
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
Not Available

Bright morning sun, birds singing, and flowers blooming. There is usually great contrast in the mornings. I exaggerated the colors in the sky, taking the colors from just slightly earlier. This is painted from photos I took at Lake Okeechobee.

Enjoy!

Lock Closed, Historical Plein Air, Drought

"Lock Closed"
8 x 10 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on hardboard

This morning I painted the boat channel, which has been closed most of this year. The water used to come up around the rocks. Every bit of the grass here was covered in water. Now the little puddle on the right is barely ankle deep. The tall grasses near the middle of the rock way are taller than a person while standing on the rocks.
This is the same area that I painted last November: "Over the Dyke."
Then I painted it again after the drought had set in,

Low Profile, Plein Air, Daily Painting

"Low Profile"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas-hardboard
(Ready to Frame)
$670.00
The lake is still very low, the water used to come up close to the palm tree in the foreground. The pier is just off to the right, but their is no water under it at all.

I had a great morning! 75 degrees and a nice breeze . . . It hasn't been that nice is a long time. I stayed a couple of hours and had all kinds of interesting people stop and visit! One man had a bird on his shoulder that laughed just like a person! My husband even came and brought me breakfast. Can't beat that!

Early Birds, Impressionism, Wildlife, Daily Painiting

"Early Birds"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
SOLD

Just love the morning sun in this little Daily Painting. It is done alla prima (all at once.) The small egret kept coming closer to the great blue heron, then the heron turned his back to me (as he is positioned here) and flew away!
There is also a small alligator in the water, he was one of five I saw that morning. most were much larger.
Don't worry, I was up above the water line with piles of rocks between us! This is from Nubbin's Slough, Lake Okeechobee.

Water Lily, Watercolor, Daily Painting

"On the Lake"
(Water Lily)
5 x 7 inches
Watercolor
Sold

I took more than 50 pictures of lilies on lake Okeechobee, before the drought. (We still can't get the boat in the water!) Now and then I paint another one of those pictures, they are all so unique. Everywhere I looked there were tons of lily pads, buds, and blooms! I was so struck by the multitudes of them that I felt like I was on a different planet.

I have been practicing watercolors as I have been giving private lessons and one of my students is in love with watercolors! We are having too much fun with them. Enjoy!

Breezy Blue,Impressionism Wildlife, Heron

"Breezy Blue"
8.5 x 4 inches
Acrylic on Watercolor Paper
Not Available

I like the tension: feels like the great blue heron is about to take off because he is looking away and placed near the edge of the painting. This is something Robert Bateman does quite often in his work, to add more interest and movement.
This is a wonderful 'off-size,' which is perfect for a hard to fill space on a wall. However, I like to remind my clients when purchasing these off-size originals that they usually have to be custom framed.

Nubbin's Shore, Plein Air Painting

"Nubbin's Shore"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on canvas board
$450.00

I think this Nubbin's Slough area appeals me for two reasons: first, we have never had a shore line here before, just water splashing up on rocks; second, I know we may never see this shore line again when the drought is over. We have had a little rain here and there, but it has only brought the water up a few inches.
