I Once Was Lost, piglet and calf

"I Once Was Lost"

About This Painting:
I saw this little wild hog following the calf around again and again, even though the mother cow kept chasing the piglet off.  The piglet would squeal and run away and then sneak back... It cracked me up!

I really enjoyed all the hours of detail in this one.

"Mama's Girl"

About This Painting:
I really like the strong temperature contrasts: the cool blues tones against the warm browns. I wanted to keep the loose brush strokes so it would have an impressionistic look, yet I wanted it to be realistic too. It is hard to get both affects. I think I was successful.

The breeding is an Italian breed, called Romagnola. This is Joshua Mixon's new calf, and I used his photograph, by permission, to paint her.

The painting continues on the sides so framing is optional.

I have been working on this little girl for a few weeks. I love her big dark eyes against all that soft white fur! This was quite a challenge, as shadows in white fur often look to dark or too light, hard to get the right balance. I am very happy with the outcome.

Painted this from a photo I took at the rodeo here in Okeechobee. We have 2 big events each year, and some smaller ones also.

Started this painting at the beginning of this week, but I didn't get much time to work on it. I enjoyed playing with the abstract background, and contrasting that with the realistic horse and rider. I also like the determined look on the girls face.

Brahmas used to be the main type of cattle around here. They are hearty and can withstand the hot weather. some of the cows will eat the oranges that fall on the ground, it is funny to watch them wrinkle up their nose and slobber all over the place!
