Valley Floor, Mountain stream

"Valley Floor"

About This Painting:
Started this painting from a demonstration. Then I went back and moved some things around. I was just playing around, got carried away with the rocky cliff and the rocky creek.

I remember the water feeling like ice in Montana. Can't even put my toes in it now when I go back to visit, I can't imagine how we swam in it when we were kids! My friends and I would dam up an area with rocks, taking the ones from where we wanted it deeper, and moving them onto the dam. Had to choose a good spot for it: where the water was already close to knee-deep. We would get the water up to chest high or so within an hour or two, but we had to get out and warm up from time to time.
So many of us are going through hard times these days. I was thinking about the valleys of life. Sometimes you find good things in the valley too.

A Song For MaryFrancis, Painted Bunting

"A Song for MaryFrancis"

About This Painting:
Commissioned piece.

This colorful bird is a Painted Bunting, male. These little buntings are like a flash of color, they are so fast and very hard to photograph! The females are green. Lately we have had a couple of Indigo Buntings too. Robert has two feeders and then he fills up the knot holes with seed also. Doves and Blue Jays try to run off the squirrels, and the black birds come and take over! Today a large Wood Pecker joined the crowd.

Winter's End Too, Florida Landscape

"Winter's End Too"
About This Painting:
The colors are lovely this time of year, especially when the sun hits things and brightens it all up. Seems like spring is trying to show up through all the dead colors. Makes for odd color combinations. Very striking though.
Ready to frame.

Media: acrylic on hardboard
Size: 7 in X 5 in (17.8 cm X 12.7 cm)

Winter's End, Florida egrets

"Winter's End"
About This Painting:
We had another cold snap this week for three days or so. It was in the thirties in the mornings. It usually doesn't get cold so often, but this winter started at the end of October, with temps in the forties in the mornings, and by November we had frost and freeze warnings. We have had more cold spells this winter and more often too, than I can remember in over twenty years!
The grass has turned a lovely burnt orange, and when the sun hits it it just glows! I was taken by the dead grass contrasted with the deep blues of the water. It is very striking. It looks fake sometimes.

Natural High, Rocky Mountains

"Natural High"
About This Painting:
It is always an exhilarating thing to hike in the Rocky Mountains. I started this as a painting lesson, then went back and recreated it by adding details and sunshine. I did this from my memories of the Rockies in Montana. Not only do I get a natural high when out in such spectacular places, I also get them when I paint things that bring back such grand memories.

Tall Glass of Water

" Tall Glass of Water"

About This Painting:
I'm not sure about the water, it may need a little more work. I like the sunlight on the horse's shoulder and his neck. I took pictures of this horse in the grass, and made up the water and the reflection, so it has been taking me a few days to get it right.

My Daily Painters group is posting reflections today so that they come up tomorrow on the same day. We try to do a theme on the first Wednesday of each month.

This painting makes me think about Psalms 23:

He makes me lie down in green pastures and He leads me beside the still waters . . .
Thanks for looking!

Painting continues on the sides, so framing is optional.

Size: 6 in X 12 in (15.2 cm X 30.5 cm)

Cabbage Palm Study, reworked

"Cabbage Palm Study"

About This Painting:
I went back and strengthened this little plein air painting so the tree trunk would show better. It just seemed to get lost in the background, so I added the reflected light on the left of the trunk and darkened the shadows in the background.

Ready to frame.

Media: acrylic on canvas panel
Size: 6 in X 8 in (15.2 cm X 20.3 cm)

Paradise, palms at sunset

"Paradise"
About This Painting:
Here is another art lesson I did last week, I have gone back and added more details and a second palm. I like the shades of purple and pink.
This type of painting is so popular, and so fun to paint. We start with an idea from a "how to paint" book, and then we add our own colors and move things around a bit. I take my students through the painting one step at a time, and still each painting turns out different and unique!
Ready to frame.

Lover's Lane, Beach Sunset

"Lover's Lane"

About This Painting:
This started as a demo, and I have gone back and added a lot of waves and sea grapes. The couple was fun to add too. The palms are from a plein air painting I did last year, only I put them by the ocean instead of the Indian River.

I wanted to get this done before Valentines, but it never worked out . . . Oh well! I like the very impressionistic feel it has, I tried not get too carried away with the detail, and keep it loose, but I tend to keep adding and fixing, so it ended up with birds, and people, and lots of wind and splash!

Ready to frame.

SeaGrapes, Plein air study

150
"SeaGrapes, Study"

About This Painting:
Went to Fort Pierce today and painted with Lori McNamara's plein air group. This is the second of two I did. It was alla prima, fast, loose and all palette knife. Too much fun. I like working on location: fresh air cool breeze, and warm sun. It was a perfect day.

Drama Queen, double hibiscus

"Drama Queen"

About This Painting:
I have been working on this large format off and on for a few months now. This is the second in a series of these large florals, but I had to put them aside before I got very far. Now that my husband is well, I am getting back to some of my goals and ambitions. Life is getting better everyday!

Painting continues on sides, framing is optional.
