Take the High Road Home, winter landscape

 "Take the High Road Home"
8 x10 inches

This was created completely from memory.  I made it up as I went along.

I loved the snow when I was young, but now I'm quite content to live in the mild winters of Florida!

I've been working on this little painting since last month.  I have to rest my right hand, but my left hand just doesn't do as good of a job.  I started this painting with my left hand. I actually created a great deal of it with my off-hand. But not the details.  My left-hand cramps and is not used to the motion of the strokes, so it is slow and cumbersome.

My dominant hand, my right hand, has been in a brace for 5 months.  The wrist is still tender and swollen. The pain runs up to my fingers and down to my elbow.  The tendon from my thumb to my wrist had a couple of small tears, and my wrist and hand had five cists.  I went through two rounds of steroids (pills) and one round of antibiotics.

The doctor wanted me to come in for steroid shots in my wrist, but I chickened out and did not go back.

Overall, I am better: I can do more with less pain, but things take longer.  I am careful not to stress it. I also wear my brace (which immobilizes my thumb) if I am doing anything that requires lifting or pulling.  When I forget, it sure lets me know!

I have several small paintings in progress, but I am not pushing myself to get them done.

Enjoy!

Endless Life, angel, knife painting

"Endless Life"
© Fawn McNeill 2009

I haven't been painting much, due to an injury to my right hand/wrist.  So I am posting this older favorite little knife painting.  I created it when I was doing a lot of small palette knife paintings. I did this for Christmas back in 2009!

On My Way, path, palms, cardinal

 "On My Way"

"I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the
Father except by me."   (Jesus speaking)  John 14:6

Exploring this path at a paint-out last year gave me some amazing photos! When the sun peaked through the clouds it inspired me to catch the memory in this painting. I've worked on this painting several times in the past few months and recently put the finishing touches on it.

The Plein air works I did that day were watercolor studies from a different area of the Ancient Oaks Preserve in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Look Up and Pray, beach sunrise with Jesus

"Look Up and Pray"

Happy New Year!

This is my first painting of the year, what an awesome start! It is amazing how it came about: it was a rush order and I happened to have something similar in progress so I agreed to do it. I added Jesus, in place of the sun, and was able to get it to the client in a few days instead of months!

I have done angels in place of the sun, but this is the first time I painted Jesus there. Had to use tiny brushes, and redo it several times.  I also added more clouds and highlights before I signed it. I love the way it turned out!

Christmas Pearls, mixed media painted tree

"Christmas Pearls"

How do you find just the right little jewel?  I actually go on treasure hunts at different thrift stores and department stores for the right pieces! I couldn't find a string of pearls the right size, so I had to carefully place each pearl to create the rows. Then I chose different charms, beads, and earrings for the ornaments.

I laid it all out before adhering everything to the painted tree. Changed my mind a few hundred times! Or so it seems.  I used Liquitex matte gel medium to secure it all one piece at a time.  (No hot glue).

This tree is smaller than  "Christmas Hope".  It has a similar feel to it with the background snow and glitter paint setting off the jewelry.

Christmas Hope, mixed media on wood

    "Christmas Hope 2"

I added crosses, flowers, angels, and angel wings from jewelry. The red beads set it all off nicely, and the glitter paint adds extra shimmer to the snow. I love the way these turn out!

I can't put into words what this piece means to me personally. It goes out with prayers for those who will find comfort in it.

Blessed written in sand, beach, painted on wood

    "Blessed"

I grinned and held back a laugh as I watched someone try to run his fingers in the "groves" because he thought the letters were carved out. This is a fantastic illusion! It is all paint, nothing was carved out of the wood.

I love the curve and the softer colors in the letters.  Captured a bit of perspective too.
This board has rough bark across the bottom, which I used as dirt and sand.

    ENJOY!

Hope written in sand, wall art, cheeseboard

    "Hope"

Cleaned, sanded, and primed this cheeseboard before writing the letters on it. I painted over the straight vertical letters I had previously drawn on it, not just once, but three times.  Could not get the water and waves to make sense with the letters.  Each time, I painted sand over the letters and tried again.

Frustrated, and tired from painting late at night, I gave up and prayed about it as I went to bed:
"Lord, can you help with this? How can I get the letters to tie in better with the sand?"
As I closed my eyes, it all came to me in clear images.  (This is not the first time I have seen the answer to a painting I am struggling with after I stop to ask for help.) You would think I would learn to ask first!

I fell asleep at peace with it. The next morning I couldn't wait to get started!  It is obvious now - people don't write in the sand vertical along the shoreline! So I turned it and tried to get some perspective, which is what I saw in my mind after I prayed about it.  This is the first time I tried to make the letters look like they are carved in the sand, which is another aspect I believe Father God showed me.

This became quite interesting to learn to do, and I am so excited that it worked! I have a few more in progress and I am getting the hang of making the illusion of letters written in the sand.  I love the extra detail and the way it looks like the wood has been carved!

Love, wall art, beach shoreline at sunset

Found this wall hanging at a thrift store.  It was a solid dull blue-gray and covered in grime. I cleaned it up, sanded it down, and painted it with lovely sunset colors. Quite satisfying!

    Loved, reflections, seashore, plaque

    "Loved"

Believe it or not, you are loved beyond measure by the Creator of the whole universe!  He wanted you, created you, and has good things planned for you. Seek Him, invite Him into your situations again and again, and ask Him for strength to get through the rough times.  He will fight for you!

I found this piece of wood at a thrift store.  Cleaned it up with alcohol and used a clear primer to prep it.  I wanted the wood grain to show through for the most part.  The reflections of the sunrise were a little challenging, but I like the way it turned out.

    Thankful, shore line

    "Thankful"

I wanted the word 'thankful' to feel like a whisper, so I glazed over it to soften the dark bold color of the letters, but I didn't want it to completely disappear, so I put less waves and sand over the letters.  I liked the effect, so I left it alone and didn't add too many details.

Blessed Shores, painted bowl, seascape, angels

    "Blessed Shores"

I found this interesting bamboo bowl at a thrift store.  It goes perfectly with my seascape theme.   The painting is small, and the large bamboo sides of the bowl frame it out dramatically.

I painted it with thoughts about when I lived on Guam, where I graduated from high school.  I was part of a youth group that put together island adventures frequently.  We explored hiking trails that led to hidden waterfalls, swam in crystal clear pools in deep caves, and had many beach parties and retreats.  Amazing memories!

This bowl was in rough shape.  I cleaned it up and repaired the broken corners before priming the bottom. The bamboo was gray and dingy at first, so after I cleaned it up (with alcohol) the colors came back to a warm brown tone, which I loved.  From there I tried to use similar colors in the sand to give it harmony.  The angels were added for symbolism of my new found faith as a teenager.

    Enjoy!

All Wrapped Up Again, mixed media, heart

    Let it Shine, blue zebra

    "Let it Shine"
    . . . Let your light shine before men . . .  Mathew 5:16

I took pictures of this little zebra out at Antlered Acres last year.  Her name is Karen.  She is not tame, but she did let me get close enough for some nice photos.  The sun lit up her stripes and her main to show all kinds of subtle color changes. Of course the photos only captured a little of that, so when I sketched different ideas for this little painting I knew I wanted to exaggerate the colors.

I zoomed in and cropped the composition so I could make her eye the focal point and try to capture her intense expression.  Plus I wanted some detail of the fur instead of making the stipes all smooth (which some of them absolutely were on her face, especially close to her muzzle).

Originally I thought I would create her all in sepia tones (as a monochrome), but the shadows of the white were such a beautiful light blueish gray that I kept dipping into blues and purples, which led to the stripes getting more of the same. This accented the wonderful contrast of the browns and oranges in the highlighted areas.

I have worked on this painting of and on for almost a year. It was a tough year.  I closed and moved twice and then had to have major repairs on the home studio as well.  So I ended up moving things in and out of storage again! (Click here to read about this past year ).

But more than all that, I think I just didn't want to be done because I enjoyed it so much. It was one of the bright spots in the middle of such difficult times. I just kept going back and changing the placement of the stripes, or shadows, or the shape of the eye.  I finally made myself stop and sign it!

    New Display

With everything shut down these days, just when I have a new series of mixed media art I want to share, I have decided to rent a small space at Unique Boutique in Okeechobee Florida.  It has been a really good experience for me. I am looking forward to making more of these fun creations available!

    Reconciled, beach scene on wood

    "Reconciled"
    Hand painted, not a pour!

First of a new series I just started, I have several in progress....
I painted this on a cutting board.  Had to clean it up, sand it some, and seal it so the paint doesn't peal off.
I'm experimenting with the wood grain showing through for the sand.  This calls for thin layers of paint.  As always, I'm using professional mediums and paints to make my own transparent colors.
    Loving it!

Wild Angels, egrets, stream, knife painting

    "Wild Angels"
    © Fawn McNeill 2007

This is an older painting that I always loved.
The morning that I took pictures of this stream, some of the foliage and mist looked like large beings. As I painted it, they began to look like angels. So I had to emphasized them.

I just put this painting in a new custom frame. (See below)

    Timeless Moments, sunset beach, seashells

    Timeless Moments
"His mercy endures forever." Psalm 136

Finished this painting a few months ago.  I haven't posted anything here in a long time.

This painting is full of thick impasto layers. I also added actual seashells, sea glass, sand dollars, and two hand sculpted clay items (a turtle in the foam, and a starfish on the shore.)  The clay items are a new element. I truly enjoyed creating them and painting them after adhering them to the canvas.  I'm using paper clay, which is clay with paper fibers added to make it stronger.  It is a lightweight clay and is something I want to explore further.

I was going through some personal issues when I painted this and thought about how somethings seem to transcend time. Some memories are as fresh as yesterday even though they happened years ago! Some things can happen in no time and seem like forever.  This led to the concept that we make time, it is in us and not just something that happens to us.  We choose to enjoy it, use it wisely, or do nothing with it.  So all of that is  flowing through this painting as the woman contemplates the vastness of it all.

I hid an angel in the sky, but not in the clouds per say, it is in reverse. The blue of the sky is in the shape of an angel by the clouds around it.  Makes it harder to find, but I wanted to make it bigger than the small ones I usually paint in the clouds.
