Lake Sunset, palm tree, watercolor

"Lake Sunset"
© Fawn McNeill 2022

Isn't this an awesome little demonstration painting?  Demos in watercolor don't usually turn out as well as I would like, but this one went well from start to finish, and includes great memories while teaching it!

I like the simplicity of it as well as the calming colors.  Of course, the strong contrast is always a plus. The cabbage palm tree really sets it all off.

I just matted this painting and made it available.  Enjoy!

~ Original Demo
~ Watercolor on acid-free watercolor paper
~ Matted to 8 x 10 inches
~ Ready to Frame
~ $75.00 (free shipping in the US)

A note about framing: Artwork on paper should be framed behind glass with a mat around it to keep it off of the glass and protect it.  This includes photographs and prints on paper.  Those on canvas or wood should not be framed behind glass.  Original oils and acrylics are usually done on canvas or wood and need to breathe.  If artwork or photograph is done on paper or mat board it should be framed behind glass with a mat to keep the image off of the glass. (Glass can trap moisture and ruin the image.)  Click here to read more about framing.

Morning Splash, beach, seascape, watercolor

"Morning Splash"

I painted three of these (three tries), each a little different. (See below for how I tried to fix the sand on the first one.)  I was practicing different ideas for the sand and ended up liking the use of a tooth brush over a fan brush because the grain of the sand turned out smaller and a little easier to control.

Watercolors are a little more difficult for me because mistakes are harder to correct.  With acrylics, I can paint over things and change my mind as often as I want.  I usually start over with watercolors if it does not capture my intended effect.  In this series, I did salvage the two that I was not as happy with, and I ended up with three nice paintings.  The one featured below has a little more depth with the extra sand dune.

Kitty Cat, class demo, pets

"Kitty Cat"
(original class demo)

This was a fun example for my kid's class.  Students did a realistic drawing of an animal up close (free hand): bunnies, cats, puppies, birds, lion cub, fox, etc... Then we transferred it to watercolor paper drawing very lightly with pencil.   We used pen and ink to exaggerate the details before adding fun and/or strange colors with watercolors!  They turned out great!

I have a show coming up Saturday the 28th of January in Sebring, Florida. I'll be indoors at the agricultural center on Hwy 27, south of town.  It is sponsored by the Lake Placid Art league.  Hope you will come see me!  I'll have some reduced prices and they give away door prizes from the artists every thirty minutes!

On a personal level; I'm excited to partner with Lynne Barletta, and her Visionary School of Arts in their out reach:  Catch the Wave of Hope!

Jesus Christmas, snow, Christmas tree, watercolor

"Jesus Christmas"
© Fawn McNeill 2016

Merry Christmas!

Just a little mixed media watercolor I did for fun.  Drew it in pencil, then painted the colors, added some salt for the cool effects in the sky. I used extra fine sharpies for the words, after the painting dried of course!

Enjoy!

Rocky Edge, shore line,watercolor

"Rocky Edge"
© Fawn McNeill 2012

What captured my attention?  The negative spaces and contrasts for sure, but originally I was attracted to the cool color temperatures in the rocks playing against the warm glow in the little bushes. I also love the contrast of the hard rocks against the soft water.
I love it when life grows in the middle of hard places.  Somehow the plants overcome the lack of soil, and they grow anyway.  Kind of like people from a cold hard life who turn out to be dynamic and inspirational even when they had very little help along the way.

This is an original watercolor painting, done with many layers of professional color on acid-free paper.

Enjoy!

Tea Time, teapot still life study

"Tea Time"

Painted this in 2003, my senior year at Florida Atlantic University.
Loved all the movement in the folds of the fabric, and the cast shadows on the pot. This has to be the hardest still life study that I have ever done!

White Ibis with Lilies, wildlife art

"White Ibis with Lilies"

Painted this from photos I took at White City Park last year. Quite a challenge to paint the negative spaces and leave the ibis. I get into a slow and methodical state of mind when working with watercolors, totally the opposite of acrylics.

Watercolor
7x10 inches (image)
12 x16 (With frame) See below

Momma's Boy, Foal, Animal Art by Fawn

"Momma's Boy"
15 x 21 inches
Watercolor

This is a painting I did back in 1996! I just came across it, and wanted to show it off. I was just beginning to use watercolors and acrylics after years of painting with oils and teaching classes in oils. I felt like I had really come a long way after I finished this one. It took me weeks! I painted every hair. . . click on the image to see the detail.
I was thinking about my boys, while I worked on this. We were abandoned by their Dad. They were around ten and twelve years old. I wanted to protect them and take away the hurt, I was helpless. And yet I know we only learn by experiencing the tough things. God loves us with such an intelligent love, turning the hard things around for good. This Bible verse really spoke to me:

"Can a woman forget her suckling child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you." Isaiah 49:15
