Take the High Road Home, winter landscape

 "Take the High Road Home"
8 x10 inches

This was created completely from memory.  I made it up as I went along.

I loved the snow when I was young, but now I'm quite content to live in the mild winters of Florida!

I've been working on this little painting since last month.  I have to rest my right hand, but my left hand just doesn't do as good of a job.  I started this painting with my left hand. I actually created a great deal of it with my off-hand. But not the details.  My left-hand cramps and is not used to the motion of the strokes, so it is slow and cumbersome.

My dominant hand, my right hand, has been in a brace for 5 months.  The wrist is still tender and swollen. The pain runs up to my fingers and down to my elbow.  The tendon from my thumb to my wrist had a couple of small tears, and my wrist and hand had five cists.  I went through two rounds of steroids (pills) and one round of antibiotics.

The doctor wanted me to come in for steroid shots in my wrist, but I chickened out and did not go back.

Overall, I am better: I can do more with less pain, but things take longer.  I am careful not to stress it. I also wear my brace (which immobilizes my thumb) if I am doing anything that requires lifting or pulling.  When I forget, it sure lets me know!

I have several small paintings in progress, but I am not pushing myself to get them done.

Enjoy!

On My Way, path, palms, cardinal

 "On My Way"

"I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the
Father except by me."   (Jesus speaking)  John 14:6

Exploring this path at a paint-out last year gave me some amazing photos! When the sun peaked through the clouds it inspired me to catch the memory in this painting. I've worked on this painting several times in the past few months and recently put the finishing touches on it.

The Plein air works I did that day were watercolor studies from a different area of the Ancient Oaks Preserve in Fort Pierce, Florida.

First Snow, fall scene, path, demonstration painting

"First Snow"
© Fawn McNeill 2022

Life is crazy busy!  I created this for an art class after Christmas, and I'm just now getting a chance to post it!

This painting is a take-off from an extremely bright fall scene, "Fall Path" (2016), which I toned down a bit.  I wanted my students to see how they could change the format to vertical, use softer colors, and/or add snow.  Very enjoyable lesson!

Morning Path, knife painting

"Morning Path"
© Fawn McNeill 2021

The plants lit up when the sun hit them just right. The orange and yellow really caught my eye along this pathway. I took lots of photos. There were birds and wildlife greeting me at every turn!

I updated this little gem with a couple of palms, a bird, and a little bunny.  I also put it in this custom frame, which I painted with a lacy gold trim.  I love it!

Enjoy!

Along the Boardwalk, seascape, mixed media

 "Along the Boardwalk" © 2019
9x12 inches Mixed Media
Acrylic on canvas
SOLD

Last year I reworked this painting from a few years ago. The sea-grapes definitely needed some attention.  I enhanced the shadows and added more detail to the boardwalk and the sandy path.   I couldn't wait to add some charms and beads in the flowers! I camouflaged them well, so they are not noticeable until you see them at an angle.  It catches the light and then you want to look for others.  I also added a few shells.  I love the way it turned out!

I made a custom frame in rustic wood, which complements the boardwalk perfectly.  (See below).

I would love to create a painting for you!
I am accepting orders for custom paintings for another week.  If you want something before Christmas we need to get started!  I will need more than a month for large paintings.

Lifting Fog, cardinal, turkey, deer, Florida art

 "Lifting Fog"

I worked on this painting off and on for a couple of years.  Just finished it in January, 2019, when I added the cardinal.  He was the whole point to begin with, so I was glad to finally put him in there!

The cardinal kept posing for me while I was scouting the area for a good place to set up my easel.  I did several small plein air (on location) studies farther down this muddy road.  I actually got my shoes wet taking photos of this old fence!

No More Tears, mountain path, angels, lake, fawn

"No more Tears"
© Fawn McNeill 2005

This is the last of my "drippy" series.  I did ten or so of these a few years ago. I like the contrast of the somewhat abstract background with realism added over the top.

It is symbolic on so many levels.

The most obvious comes from a Bible verse (Rev 21:4) that says He (Jesus) will wipe the tears from our eyes in heaven.

The fawn is my name sake, so it represents me on a path to better things.

The path is about choices and free will.  I have made my share of regretful journeys.

The drips and runs are all about tears and sorrow bringing about growth.  I poured my heart and my sorrows into this series for many months.  Then I got it all out and moved on!

The mountains represent the good things in life, and heading for higher places spiritually.  Better choices.

The angels in the mountains represent the spiritual battle.  One of the angels is praying, and one has a shield and sword.  They fight for us!

Using acrylics this thin jeopardizes the integrity and quality of the paint, so the finished painting must be sealed with at least 2 coats of acrylic sealer.  I prefer a semi-gloss, which I make by mixing two thirds gloss medium and varnish (Liquitex) with one third matte medium.

(I started a palette knife series with bold strong colors and thick textures after this painting.)

Size:18 x 24 inches

Inspired by Kit Mahoney,  She uses wonderful colors, and I did not do it justice! I changed it up by reversing it and adding a path.  My students loved it.

Rollin Through, mountain landscape with barn

"Rollin' Through"

Originally a demonstration painting for my adult class, but I changed it quite a bit when I started adding details.  I got caught up in some good memories of a place I saw in the mountains near my grandmother's house.  My friends and I rode horses in the Rockies, and this looks a lot like one of the driveways we passed on the way. I remember watching the clouds move up along the sides of the mountain and thinking how cool that looked!

Enjoy!

"Another Piece of Paradise"

This is the third painting in this series of large sunsets.  It is symbolic for the journey we are on.  Many times we come through the dry and harsh places before we find a season of beauty that is overwhelming. Maybe we wouldn't have recognized it if we hadn't struggled to find better things.

This is a palette knife painting, full of texture and bold color.  I added horses running in the distance as a celebration of life.

Enjoy!

Tested, old barn after a storm

"Tested"

This one started as a demonstration for a beginners class last spring.  Love the mood it sets.

My demos are done for follow-along classes.  Sometimes we use my pictures, or pictures that my students bring in. Sometimes we use art books or calendars.  We do not copy exactly from the image.  We move things around.  I encourage them to use their own colors, add more trees, flowers, birds, or whatever they want.  I love they way they all look a little different at the end of class.

Paradise at Sunset, Florida landscape with wildlife

"Paradise at Sunset"

This painting is the second in a series I started this summer.  I created them both from memory.  The animals are free-handed onto the canvas after I practice drawing them on paper first.  This time I reversed things and brightened the sky. Also included deer, egrets, turkey, hogs, and a gator. This is a truly original painting.  Most of mine are (unless I am doing one for a client that wants something from their photos).  I use my own images and /or my own sketches and free-hand everything.  Many artists today copy from photos, literally.  They get enlargements trace it off -- and sometimes it is not even their own photos!  You can read more about that by clicking here.
