Sanderlings, shore birds

 "Sanderlings"
© Fawn McNeill 2004

Drip, drip drip. Spritz the paint, tip the painting back to slow the runs, and watch the colors bleed into each other.  Way too cool.

Fun memories! Just pulled this large painting out of storage.  It is part of a 'drippy' series I did years ago.  I believe I did 10 in this style.  The paint is harder to control and similar to watercolors, but on canvas it spreads differently.  The goal is to create an abstract background and then add realism with thick paint and details over the top. This gives it more contrast in transparency against the opaqueness.

When acrylics are thinned with water instead of with a gloss or matte medium, it is not as permanent and can be easily damaged even after it is dry. Using thin runny paint actually jeopardizes the integrity of acrylics. So I sealed it when I was finished with a few layers of semi-gloss medium and varnish to protect it. (I prefer using professional grade paints and mediums.) Once sealed, the integrity of the painting is restored.  It can be cleaned with a damp cloth if needed without lifting off any of the color.

All Wrapped Up Again, mixed media, heart

"All Wrapped Up Again"

Added some beads and glitter paint to this old gem.  I love the way it shines when the light hits it from different angles.  I also strengthened the tiny black shadows.

I've been having too much fun with these mixed media pieces!

Let it Shine, blue zebra

"Let it Shine"
. . . Let your light shine before men . . .  Mathew 5:16

I took pictures of this little zebra out at Antlered Acres last year.  Her name is Karen.  She is not tame, but she did let me get close enough for some nice photos.  The sun lit up her stripes and her main to show all kinds of subtle color changes. Of course the photos only captured a little of that, so when I sketched different ideas for this little painting I knew I wanted to exaggerate the colors.

I zoomed in and cropped the composition so I could make her eye the focal point and try to capture her intense expression.  Plus I wanted some detail of the fur instead of making the stipes all smooth (which some of them absolutely were on her face, especially close to her muzzle).

Originally I thought I would create her all in sepia tones (as a monochrome), but the shadows of the white were such a beautiful light blueish gray that I kept dipping into blues and purples, which led to the stripes getting more of the same. This accented the wonderful contrast of the browns and oranges in the highlighted areas.

I have worked on this painting of and on for almost a year. It was a tough year.  I closed and moved twice and then had to have major repairs on the home studio as well.  So I ended up moving things in and out of storage again! (Click here to read about this past year ).

But more than all that, I think I just didn't want to be done because I enjoyed it so much. It was one of the bright spots in the middle of such difficult times. I just kept going back and changing the placement of the stripes, or shadows, or the shape of the eye.  I finally made myself stop and sign it!

Morning Flight, angel, knife painting

"Morning Flight"

This was a demonstration for a video lesson, but the video cut off during the session and I didn't know it. I did the whole thing thinking I was still recording!  LOL.  I went ahead and did another demo knife painting with the angel facing the other way, which recorded fine. I think this one turned out better, so I framed it.

I like the transparency of the angel and the soft colors. I also like the way the bottom could be sky or water.  Palette knife paintings lend themselves to abstract qualities which leaves room for the imagination. It is also fun to load up thick amounts of paint and smear it all together.

A Crab's Life, rocks and waves, mixed media

"A Crabs Life"

This is a take off from a painting I did years ago at the Bathtub Beach in Stuart, Florida.  It is part of my new series of mixed media art.  I zoomed in and abstracted it a little compared to the first painting ("Rock and Roll").

I used the large aquarium stones this time, with beads that catch the light at different angles. I painted a little crab in the rocks, which was totally spontaneous.  It made me laugh when I put the red beads on him for eyes.

The splash was built up in layers of paint.  I used more gel medium this time instead of the thick heavy gesso because the gel medium dries clear.  It also dries shiny, which was good for sparkle on the water.

Art Show

Had a great show at the end of January! (Been so busy that I didn't get a chance to post it.)

Showed some of my new mixed-media series, and some of my older originals. I  had such a large variety going on that I didn't think I would be in the mix to win an award.  Often times judges like to see a coherent body of work.

I sold some art, won a blue ribbon, and shared my testimony to many who asked about the meaning behind the paintings.  It was an awesome day.

Thank you Lake Placid Art League!  It was encouraging to be so well received by so many people!

Here are some pictures, Enjoy! (Click on an image to enlarge it).

Spilling Over Again, abstract, mixed media

"Spilling Over Again"

This is a take off from an older abstract painting called "Spilling Over." It is part of a new series of mixed media paintings.  This one has aquarium stones, beads, and tiny pearls.

I'm experimenting with adding found objects and/or impasto techniques (thick raised texture to paint over.)

I did some of this in college, but that was a few years ago....

Starting small, and learning so much about gel medium, heavy gesso, and acrylic modeling paste!  Way too cool.

This one is framed in a black shadow box.

Kitty Cat, class demo, pets

"Kitty Cat"
(original class demo)

This was a fun example for my kid's class.  Students did a realistic drawing of an animal up close (free hand): bunnies, cats, puppies, birds, lion cub, fox, etc... Then we transferred it to watercolor paper drawing very lightly with pencil.   We used pen and ink to exaggerate the details before adding fun and/or strange colors with watercolors!  They turned out great!

I have a show coming up Saturday the 28th of January in Sebring, Florida. I'll be indoors at the agricultural center on Hwy 27, south of town.  It is sponsored by the Lake Placid Art league.  Hope you will come see me!  I'll have some reduced prices and they give away door prizes from the artists every thirty minutes!

On a personal level; I'm excited to partner with Lynne Barletta, and her Visionary School of Arts in their out reach:  Catch the Wave of Hope!

No More Tears, mountain path, angels, lake, fawn

"No more Tears"
© Fawn McNeill 2005

This is the last of my "drippy" series.  I did ten or so of these a few years ago. I like the contrast of the somewhat abstract background with realism added over the top.

It is symbolic on so many levels.

The most obvious comes from a Bible verse (Rev 21:4) that says He (Jesus) will wipe the tears from our eyes in heaven.

The fawn is my name sake, so it represents me on a path to better things.

The path is about choices and free will.  I have made my share of regretful journeys.

The drips and runs are all about tears and sorrow bringing about growth.  I poured my heart and my sorrows into this series for many months.  Then I got it all out and moved on!

The mountains represent the good things in life, and heading for higher places spiritually.  Better choices.

The angels in the mountains represent the spiritual battle.  One of the angels is praying, and one has a shield and sword.  They fight for us!

Using acrylics this thin jeopardizes the integrity and quality of the paint, so the finished painting must be sealed with at least 2 coats of acrylic sealer.  I prefer a semi-gloss, which I make by mixing two thirds gloss medium and varnish (Liquitex) with one third matte medium.

(I started a palette knife series with bold strong colors and thick textures after this painting.)

Media: Acrylic on canvas
Size:18 x 24 inches

Quenching the Darts, Abstract, knife painting, faith and prayer

"Quenching the Darts" (Ephesians 6:16)
© Fawn McNeill 2008

Just made this palette knife painting available in prints and cards!

This original knife painting was done alla prima (all in one session) which creates unique mixtures of color and thick texture.  Usually they are fun and exciting to create.  This one, however, came from frustration and cries for mercy.

I cried out to the Almighty as I struggled through marriage problems, (which we didn't know was due to my husband having hydrocephalus and a tumor in the back of his ear canal that was growing into his brain.)  Just a few months later he had the first of two brain surgeries, and he is doing well now.  We have overcome huge obstacles.  I am grateful for the lessons learned and the peace that the Lord gives even in the midst of the struggles.

Florida Skies Too, abstract knife painting

"Florida Skies Too"

About This Painting:
This is an older one from a few years ago.  Started going through my inventory and decided I would rather they go to good homes at lower prices than sit on my shelf!

When I created this one I revisited an older painting, completely changing it by using a knife. I really enjoy using such intense colors!

Enjoy!

Endless Joy, palette knife angel

"Endless Joy"

Took one of my abstracts and added this angel to it.  Love the way it came together!

This angel is for the kind of joy you can only find (even in hard times) when you lay down your plans and seek the Lord's.

Angels are not like humans and humans do not become angels (according the the holy scriptures).  The fallen angels are far out numbered, and we have been given power over them in Jesus name. So when we forgive and pray blessings on others and ourselves, our Father's angels battle for us, helping us overcome the trials and hardships that come against us.  They have been given charge over those who seek the Lord.

Passing Through, rainbow landscape, knife painting

"Passing Through"

The first one like this was on watercolor paper for my kid's summer art classes. The inspiration came from Van Gogh. It was done with a paintbrush and didn't have much detail.  I liked the idea, however, and painted it again on hardboard with a palette knife.  Lots of fun!  Then some of my older students painted one like it with a palette knife too. I added the butterflies to finish it up.
