No More Tears, mountain path, angels, lake, fawn

"No more Tears"
© Fawn McNeill 2005

This is the last of my "drippy" series.  I did ten or so of these a few years ago. I like the contrast of the somewhat abstract background with realism added over the top.

It is symbolic on so many levels.

The most obvious comes from a Bible verse (Rev 21:4) that says He (Jesus) will wipe the tears from our eyes in heaven.

The fawn is my name sake, so it represents me on a path to better things.

The path is about choices and free will.  I have made my share of regretful journeys.

The drips and runs are all about tears and sorrow bringing about growth.  I poured my heart and my sorrows into this series for many months.  Then I got it all out and moved on!

The mountains represent the good things in life, and heading for higher places spiritually.  Better choices.

The angels in the mountains represent the spiritual battle.  One of the angels is praying, and one has a shield and sword.  They fight for us!

Using acrylics this thin jeopardizes the integrity and quality of the paint, so the finished painting must be sealed with at least 2 coats of acrylic sealer.  I prefer a semi-gloss, which I make by mixing two thirds gloss medium and varnish (Liquitex) with one third matte medium.

(I started a palette knife series with bold strong colors and thick textures after this painting.)

Healing Waters, stream with flowers

"Healing Waters Again"
(original class demo)

Created this for the kids summer art program last June (2016).  We used it to create knife paintings.  (This painting was not done with a palette knife.)  Students toned their canvases with base colors of browns and blues with a large flat brush first, then added colors over the top with a knife.  It was a great lesson in texture.

Media: Acrylic on canvas
Size: 11 x 14 inches

Lead Me to the Rock, sunset, rocky shore, seascape

"Lead Me to the Rock"
original demo

(Prints are available with or without scripture)

Did this as a demo during class, we made it up as we went along. Started with titanium white, cadmium yellow and a small amount of naphthol crimson. First we painted the center of the canvas (mixing on the canvas), then added some naphthol crimson with white for the clouds (which needed more yellow mixed in). Used dioxazine purple and ultramarine blue with white for a nice cool contrast. We let it dry and then added a second layer. The black was painted last, it has bits of orange and green mixed in.  This is a great lesson on blending and mixing. Hint: use small amounts of darker stronger colors!

Poured Out, waterfall, knife painting, class demo

"Poured Out"

Created this painting with palette knives with my students.  Knives are harder for little hands to paint with, but the interesting textures and colors are exciting for them to discover.  It was a tough project, but we had great results!

ENJOY!

Green Parrot, pet portrait

"Green Parrot"
©Fawn McNeill 2008

I drew this guy freehand, then did an under painting in black and white. This was a study in complimentary colors.  Corrected quite a few errors as I painted the under painting. Then I went in with green and red glazes (added Liquitex semi-gloss medium and varnish to make a transparent glaze) after the under painting was dry. It made him glow.  Adding the red tuft on his head was fun too.

Quenching the Darts, Abstract, knife painting, faith and prayer

"Quenching the Darts" (Ephesians 6:16)
© Fawn McNeill 2008

Just made this palette knife painting available in prints and cards!

This original knife painting was done alla prima (all in one session) which creates unique mixtures of color and thick texture.  Usually they are fun and exciting to create.  This one, however, came from frustration and cries for mercy.

I cried out to the Almighty as I struggled through marriage problems, (which we didn't know was due to my husband having hydrocephalus and a tumor in the back of his ear canal that was growing into his brain.)  Just a few months later he had the first of two brain surgeries, and he is doing well now.  We have overcome huge obstacles.  I am grateful for the lessons learned and the peace that the Lord gives even in the midst of the struggles.
