Take the High Road Home, winter landscape

 "Take the High Road Home"
8 x10 inches

This was created completely from memory.  I made it up as I went along.

I loved the snow when I was young, but now I'm quite content to live in the mild winters of Florida!

I've been working on this little painting since last month.  I have to rest my right hand, but my left hand just doesn't do as good of a job.  I started this painting with my left hand. I actually created a great deal of it with my off-hand. But not the details.  My left-hand cramps and is not used to the motion of the strokes, so it is slow and cumbersome.

My dominant hand, my right hand, has been in a brace for 5 months.  The wrist is still tender and swollen. The pain runs up to my fingers and down to my elbow.  The tendon from my thumb to my wrist had a couple of small tears, and my wrist and hand had five cists.  I went through two rounds of steroids (pills) and one round of antibiotics.

The doctor wanted me to come in for steroid shots in my wrist, but I chickened out and did not go back.

Overall, I am better: I can do more with less pain, but things take longer.  I am careful not to stress it. I also wear my brace (which immobilizes my thumb) if I am doing anything that requires lifting or pulling.  When I forget, it sure lets me know!

I have several small paintings in progress, but I am not pushing myself to get them done.

Enjoy!

Spring Rush, mountain waterfall, knife painting

 "Spring Rush"

Good memories: Mountain hikes, melting snow, fast-moving creeks, and streams flowing over their banks.

This palette knife painting is from a combination of places, but mostly from memories of my grandmother and me at Glacier National Park.  She loved driving through there when we would go visit my great-grandmother in Helena. I loved stopping at the falls and hiking up a bit to take pictures.

It is also a memory of hiking up in the Cabinet Mountains near Libby, Montana where my grandmother lived.  Late spring and early summer there was still lots of snow in the mountains. One summer in the middle of June my brothers and I were hiking and had a snowball fight with our mom!

I started this painting a few years ago.  Like so many I create for an art class, I don't feel they are finished.  Most of my time teaching is spent, well, teaching! I don't pay much attention to what is happening on my easel. With the pandemic and the closing of my gallery, almost everything went into storage.  I pulled this one out last week. I brightened up the highlights, added stronger shadows, and filled in the empty places.

I have recently destroyed quite a few paintings that were in storage.  My goal this summer was to get them out and do something with them. I had hoped for more positive results. I wanted to make some corrections and/or finish them.  But some just didn't work out.  I am happy this one survived! (You can read more about that here.)

First Snow, fall scene, path, demonstration painting

"First Snow"
© Fawn McNeill 2022

Life is crazy busy!  I created this for an art class after Christmas, and I'm just now getting a chance to post it!

This painting is a take-off from an extremely bright fall scene, "Fall Path" (2016), which I toned down a bit.  I wanted my students to see how they could change the format to vertical, use softer colors, and/or add snow.  Very enjoyable lesson!

Mountain Air Too, colorful knife painting

 "Mountain Air, Too"
© Fawn McNeill 2020

This was originally a demonstration painting for an art lesson last year.  I was doing semi-private lessons after everything closed down from COVID.   I went back later and repainted it as a knife painting to add more texture and details.  It quickly became one of my favorites!

Fond Memories, horses, mountain landscape

"Fond Memories"
18 x 24 inches
Acrylic on canvas

Just updated this image for prints and gifts!

Made most of this painting from memory. Actually I created it from a few different memories of my summers in Montana, and I also combined different horses.  I put the Swede mountain range in the distance, but used the gorge from  Libby Creek to set it all off.  I made the stream bigger than I remember it too.   I added less mud and more water to clean it up.

You can get cards and prints, and other cool stuff with this image on it!

King of the Hill, winter sunrise

"King of the Hill"
© Fawn McNeill 2008

This little original painting was a study on complementary colors. I  used Ultramarine Blue, and Cadmium Orange (the complement or contrast to blue), and White. The white and orange make a nice peach glow, and the light blues set it off. The dark blackish colors were made by mixing orange and blue with no white. (For gray hues, add white). Amazing to see the variety of colors created with this limited palette.

Thought maybe I should add angels, or splatter for falling snow.  What do you think?

Enjoy!

No More Tears, mountain path, angels, lake, fawn

"No more Tears"
© Fawn McNeill 2005

This is the last of my "drippy" series.  I did ten or so of these a few years ago. I like the contrast of the somewhat abstract background with realism added over the top.

It is symbolic on so many levels.

The most obvious comes from a Bible verse (Rev 21:4) that says He (Jesus) will wipe the tears from our eyes in heaven.

The fawn is my name sake, so it represents me on a path to better things.

The path is about choices and free will.  I have made my share of regretful journeys.

The drips and runs are all about tears and sorrow bringing about growth.  I poured my heart and my sorrows into this series for many months.  Then I got it all out and moved on!

The mountains represent the good things in life, and heading for higher places spiritually.  Better choices.

The angels in the mountains represent the spiritual battle.  One of the angels is praying, and one has a shield and sword.  They fight for us!

Using acrylics this thin jeopardizes the integrity and quality of the paint, so the finished painting must be sealed with at least 2 coats of acrylic sealer.  I prefer a semi-gloss, which I make by mixing two thirds gloss medium and varnish (Liquitex) with one third matte medium.

(I started a palette knife series with bold strong colors and thick textures after this painting.)

Size:18 x 24 inches

Poured Out, waterfall, knife painting, class demo

"Poured Out"

Created this painting with palette knives with my students.  Knives are harder for little hands to paint with, but the interesting textures and colors are exciting for them to discover.  It was a tough project, but we had great results!

ENJOY!

Mountain Air, cabin, river landscape

"Mountain Air"

This painting had a rough start.  It was only half finished as a demo.  The class was large, so I didn't get a chance to do much in the way of demonstrating.
I played around with it a few more times, adding snow, a cabin, and fog.  I got carried away with the rocks and the water, working over them a few times.  The large tree in the foreground was taken out and added back twice.  Clouds were strengthened and eagles were added too.
I made it available in print a while ago but I forgot to post the original.

Gentle Song Too, waterfall, palette knife painting

"Gentle Song Too"

This painting is all about contrast.  I like the contrast of the light and dark values, but the cool and warm tones make a different kind of contrast too. I am also intrigued by the contrast of the flowing and moving water against the harsh rocks. The palette knife lends itself well to the abstract look of the rocks, and it emphasizes the movement in the water too.  It was originally created in 2010, but I have gone back and added more details.

Summer Camp, Mountain Landscape

"Summer Camp"
© Fawn McNeill 2014

Just added the canoe to this painting of the Spokane River.  There was a bunch of canoes piled up just to the right, so I decided to pull this one over and include it.  I didn't want it to take away from the rest of the painting, so I added lots of weeds in front of it.  I like the way it adds more interest to the composition.

This painting is about Retreats and Bible camp.  So many life-changing decisions and good memories!

Passing Through, rainbow landscape, knife painting

"Passing Through"

The first one like this was on watercolor paper for my kid's summer art classes. The inspiration came from Van Gogh. It was done with a paintbrush and didn't have much detail.  I liked the idea, however, and painted it again on hardboard with a palette knife.  Lots of fun!  Then some of my older students painted one like it with a palette knife too. I added the butterflies to finish it up.

Flutter By, landscape with butterfly

"Flutter By"

Created as a class demonstration from one of my student's photos. I left out some of the flowers, and exaggerated the hills. I also placed the butterfly at a different angle.  This  is one of the few demos that turned out nice right off the bat.  Didn't have to add very much to it to finish it up.

Rollin Through, mountain landscape with barn

"Rollin' Through"

Originally a demonstration painting for my adult class, but I changed it quite a bit when I started adding details.  I got caught up in some good memories of a place I saw in the mountains near my grandmother's house.  My friends and I rode horses in the Rockies, and this looks a lot like one of the driveways we passed on the way. I remember watching the clouds move up along the sides of the mountain and thinking how cool that looked!

Enjoy!

Up to Zero, winter mountain landscape

"Up to Zero"
© Fawn McNeill 2013

Memories of living in Montana with my my Grandmother, who loved to say, "It's up to Zero today!"  This always got my attention because I had just moved back in with her after living in the tropics for almost 5 years!

This started as a demo for an art lesson. It was created from different photos and memories.  I love the warm and cool contrasts.

Fond Memories, mountain landscape with horses running

"Fond Memories"

Made most of this painting from memory. Actually I created it from a few different memories of my summers in Montana, and I also combined different horses.  I put the Swede mountain range in the distance, but used the gorge from  Libby Creek to set it all off.  I made the stream bigger than I remember it too. It was always a muddy mess right here where the horses crossed it regularly.  I added less mud and more water to clean it up some.  Plus I love all the splash.  I used some photos for the horses, but left a few of them out and changed their colors to symbolize my childhood dreams.  This painting took months to complete, and then I went back and reworked it too.
