Okeechobee Blessings, Florida Landscape

 "Okeechobee Blessings"

I just finished this painting from last year.  I created it during a class as a lesson last summer. It was still unfinished and rough because I helped my students finish up their paintings.  So now I have added quite a bit more detail, including the clouds and sun.  There is also an angel in the sky.  I gave it more texture on the foliage and grass before adding the tiny details.

This painting was created from my sketches. It is a combination of places I have been here in Okeechobee county.

Streams of Joy, knife painting

"Streams of Joy"
© Fawn McNeill 2020

From a demonstration painting originally. It is a little harder for students to get the hang of when you take the brushes away! Too much fun!

I added extra details and some butterflies later to finish it out.

ENJOY!

First Snow, fall scene, path, demonstration painting

"First Snow"
© Fawn McNeill 2022

Life is crazy busy!  I created this for an art class after Christmas, and I'm just now getting a chance to post it!

This painting is a take-off from an extremely bright fall scene, "Fall Path" (2016), which I toned down a bit.  I wanted my students to see how they could change the format to vertical, use softer colors, and/or add snow.  Very enjoyable lesson!

Coming Storm, seascape, knife painting

"Coming Storm"  © Fawn McNeill 2022

This painting started as a demo for one of my children's art classes. We used different tools for different textures.  The clouds were made with crumpled paper towels dipped in paint.  The water and waves were created with a painting knife, and the sand was tapped in with a stippling brush and some knife work.

The support is a mat board that was sealed on both sides with a clear primer before we started.  Some of the dark color of the mat board peeks through.

Love the way it came together. I went back later and finished it up with more layers and details.

Enjoy!

A note about framing: Artwork on paper should be framed behind glass with a mat around it to keep it off of the glass and protect it.  This includes photographs and prints on paper.  Those on canvas or wood should not be framed behind glass.  Original oils and acrylics are usually done on canvas or wood and need to breathe.  If they are done on paper or mat board they should be framed behind glass with a mat to keep them off of the glass. (Glass can trap moisture and ruin the artwork.)

Friendly Snowman, chatting with a cardinal

"Friendly Snowman"

"How do you do?" I imagined the snowman welcoming the little red bird who seemed content to stay awhile.

Sometimes these demo paintings are just too fun to put down.  I made this one up in one afternoon for my afterschool art class.    My students will use him to add to their own winter scene, with or without the snow-covered tree. And I'm sure some will add the cardinal.

More Joy, Christmas ornament, snow, mixed media

"More Joy"
© Fawn McNeill 2020

I liked the first one so much that I taught this class again to a different group of students.  I added extra snow, and bling to this second Christmas Joy ornament painting. This one is a little larger.  Both were from separate demonstration paintings for art classes. I finished them up later with details, metallic paint, and glitter paint.

Christmas Snow, Christmas tree, mixed media

"Christmas Snow"
© Fawn McNeill 2018

I went back and embellished this painting by adding glitter paint, and metallic paint.  I have done 3 of these, and each one is different. Daytime or night, a path or a pond, and of course the Christmas tree placement. This one has lights coming down, reminiscent of a hint of  Northern lights, and a suggestion of a frozen lake or pond.
This is also a fun lesson sample for the children's art class. I encourage my students to add their own ideas, like a snowman, wildlife, or sunset colors.

I framed this painting in an ornate frame, which set it off nicely (see below).

Mountain Air Too, colorful knife painting

 "Mountain Air, Too"
© Fawn McNeill 2020

This was originally a demonstration painting for an art lesson last year.  I was doing semi-private lessons after everything closed down from COVID.   I went back later and repainted it as a knife painting to add more texture and details.  It quickly became one of my favorites!

Mountain Rush, waterfall, knife painting

"Mountain Rush"

I have done this scene as demonstration paintings a few times. This one I decided to go back and rework the entire painting with palette knives.   This makes it unique and more interesting as it becomes full of new color mixtures and thick textures.  Knife paintings are a little harder, especially if I want details and realism, so I have to remind myself to keep it suggestive.  I do use tiny brushes for the extras (like the eagle).

I wanted to use knives because of the rough texture of the rocks, which a palette knife renders very nicely.

Christmas Joy, painting of an ornament, mixed media

"Christmas Joy"

This was originally a demonstration painting from a year ago that I did for one of my classes.  I finished it up recently by splattering it with white and then adding bits of silver glitter (and I also added chunky glitter where I wanted the snow to pile up more).  The gold is metallic paint and the red has some red glitter paint.  I love all the extra sparkle it added.  When you view it at different angles the light catches on it and it shines.

I put it in an expensive custom gold frame to really set it off.

Enjoy!

Merry Christmas!

December Snow, winter, mixed media, original art

 "December Snow"

This was originally a demonstration painting from last year.  I thought I would spruce it up a bit by adding some glitter paint and bling.  I also added an angel in the sky.  When my young students did their paintings of this scene they often added a cabin and/or a snowman.  The snow twinkles a little in the background from glitter paint. The path has chunky glitter paint along the light edges, so it sparkles when you view it at different angles.

These are fun to create! It is also a great gift idea!

Spring Shoreline,colorful morning

"Spring Shoreline"
(original demo)
11x14 inches
Acrylic on canvas

This was the first of 2, painted this past April.  I created it as a guide, then did the step-by-step painting during class for the second one.  Lots of strong colors, which I love to paint.

The challenging part was getting the waves to curve on the beach,  but every one captured it nicely.  Each painting turns out unique and different, as I encourage my students to move things around and use their favorite colors.

Fun impressionistic painting lesson.  This is an original class demo, created before class as an instructional guide.  It was the first, then I painted another, similar one, with my students step-by-step.

Royal Poinciana study, Florida art

"Poinciana Study"
Original class painting
16 x 20 inches, acrylic on canvas
SOLD

Happy New Year!

This painting was created during a class, while teaching my students how to create similar trees. We used my own photos and sketches as I demonstrated each step of the painting.

My students are encouraged to move things around, use different colors, and add extra plants or animals to their paintings. Each painting turns out very unique.

Did you know these trees also come in yellow?

This painting started as a demo for my adult class last spring. Added lots of extra details, like the ducks, hay in the barn, a fence, and birds flying overhead.  I don't always finish the demo's, but I liked the way this one turned out, so I stayed with it.

Great Egret, knife painting

Great Egret,  class demo
9 x 12 inches, acrylic knife painting.
(Not Available)

Donated this painting for one of our raffles for the
Top of the Lake Art Fest,
as part of a fund raiser for Okeechobee Main Street,
who puts on the show every year.

This demo painting for my adult class did not start as a knife painting.  We used brushes as I demonstrated each step.  Then I added more detail to finish it up later and got carried away with the thick chunky paint (using a palette knife) for the bark on the tree.  Did more knife work to the rest of the painting also.  But I used a brush for the soft feathers of the egret, and the flowers.  Love the contrast of the thick and thin applications of paint.

Congrats to Gloria Pitsch for winning this painting!

Kitty Cat, class demo, pets

"Kitty Cat"
(original class demo)

This was a fun example for my kid's class.  Students did a realistic drawing of an animal up close (free hand): bunnies, cats, puppies, birds, lion cub, fox, etc... Then we transferred it to watercolor paper drawing very lightly with pencil.   We used pen and ink to exaggerate the details before adding fun and/or strange colors with watercolors!  They turned out great!

I have a show coming up Saturday the 28th of January in Sebring, Florida. I'll be indoors at the agricultural center on Hwy 27, south of town.  It is sponsored by the Lake Placid Art league.  Hope you will come see me!  I'll have some reduced prices and they give away door prizes from the artists every thirty minutes!
