Lake Sunset, palm tree, watercolor

"Lake Sunset"
© Fawn McNeill 2022

Isn't this an awesome little demonstration painting?  Demos in watercolor don't usually turn out as well as I would like, but this one went well from start to finish, and includes great memories while teaching it!

I like the simplicity of it as well as the calming colors.  Of course, the strong contrast is always a plus. The cabbage palm tree really sets it all off.

I just matted this painting.  Enjoy!

A note about framing: Artwork on paper should be framed behind glass with a mat around it to keep it off of the glass and protect it.  This includes photographs and prints on paper.  Those on canvas or wood should not be framed behind glass.  Original oils and acrylics are usually done on canvas or wood and need to breathe.  If artwork or photograph is done on paper or mat board it should be framed behind glass with a mat to keep the image off of the glass. (Glass can trap moisture and ruin the image.)  Click here to read more about framing.

At the Edge, mixed media, blue heron

"At the Edge" (Lake Okeechobee)

© 2020

Original Mixed Media

A few years ago, I did some plein air studies during a drought at Nubbin's Slough.  This experimental painting came from those studies.  Here I used paper-clay for the rocks.  (Paper fibers are added to the clay for more strength).  These hand sculpted rocks have a cool looking 3-D effect.  I also enjoyed building up the weeds with gel medium to create interesting patterns of texture.

I hid some angels in the sky and used tiny brushes for the distant birds and extra details.

Over the Dike, Lake Okeechobee, Florida Art

 "Over the Dike"
9 x 12 inches,
Acrylic on hardboard
©2006     $350.00

Here is another older one of the Lake.  Below is a comparison to the same area (lock G36) when we had a drought for a couple of years.  I was fascinated with the new bright greens that showed up more and more as the water receded.  Haven't seen anything close to that since.

In the Morning, Lake Okeechobee

"In The Morning"  © 2007
Acrylic   12 x 16
Sold

Had a request for paintings of  Lake Okeechobee.  I have done a lot of them, but it has been a while.  This one is probably my favorite of all of the lake paintings I have done over the past 30 years.  Hard to believe I have been here that many years! (I moved 15 times as a child and 5 times as a young adult.)  I guess I wanted to settle down, ha ha ha!

As I painted it, I was singing a song that has this verse in it: "Oh Lord in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee and will look up . . ." Psalm 5:3

Big Lake Sunset, knife landscape painting

"Big Lake Sunset"

This is an older painting. I did it alla prima, or all at once, it is of Lake Okeechobee.  I truly love the texture and color that is unique to knife paintings.  Some of my students are doing palette knife beach scenes right now, so I wanted to post this one in response to what we are doing in class.

Winter Marsh, Lake, egrets

"Winter Marsh"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
$375.00

This painting is simple but effective. I captured the feeling I was after: cooler weather and the fleeting moment of birds rushing off out of sight.  I enjoy working in more of an impressionistic style too.

Returning Thanks, wildlife art, blue heron

"RETURNING THANKS"

I did around ten of these runny and drippy paintings.  They are done with acrylics on canvas, at a standing easel, so all the paint runs down.  It's a messy and fast application of layers of paint. Then I add the details over that once it is dry, so the contrast of warm and cool colors is played up against the contrasting thin against thick paint.  It has to be sealed with a few coats of clear sealer because the integrity of the paint has been jeopardized.

Just made this older painting available in prints and cards. You can order what ever size you want.

Moving On, sunset, landscape, rim canal

"Moving On"

Started as a demo with distant hills and a large lake. I went back later and turned the hills into the dike around Lake Okeechobee. Completely made this up from memory. Then I added the rocky shore, palm tree, and birds. Finally I made the alligator swimming in the canal.

Morning's Song, lake landscape, egret

"Morning's Song"

About This Painting:
Took pictures of this great egret on a foggy morning while I was at Lake Okeechobee. We were in a drought and the grasses and weeds had taken over. This whole area was usually under water! I was attracted to the contrast of the orange bushes and the green grasses.

Ready to frame.

G-36, Lake Okeechobbe canal, landscape

"G-36, Lake Okeechobee canal"

This is one of the first Plein air (on location) paintings I did with a palette knife. I always liked the way it turned out. It was very windy that day, which added to the challenge. I felt quite proud of myself for finishing it!

Enjoy!

Cypress Shores, landscape, egret and alligator, knife painting

"Cypress Shores"

Painted this palette knife painting from memory. It is from a fishing trip we went on last week. There were so many birds and alligators that I just had to add some, but the painting was really about the interesting shapes the cypress trees made with the morning sky showing through them.
The palette knife texture is thick and the colors are strong, I also like the way the contrast turned out this time.

Egret study, palette knife painting

"Egret study"

About This Painting:
I am starting a larger painting that is similar to this. Just playing with different ideas, and working on the color scheme. I love using the palette knife for the texture too, but the larger painting will be done in a different style. I saw a lot of egrets and great blue herons at the lake the other day, and the weeds were all different colors. The birds got lost in it all, and the photos didn't turn out very good, so I tried to make improvements in this painting!
Ready to frame.

Size: 6 in X 6 in (15.2 cm X 15.2 cm)
Price: $200 USD

Big Lake Sunset, palette knife painting

"Big Lake Sunset"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

I am getting fond of the palette knife, I love the texture it creates! This painting was done alla prima, or all at once, to get that thick overlapping quality. It is often the goal, but seldom happens that way.  Painting over dry paint doesn't give the same mixtures of color.
I got out for a walk at the lake a few days ago, and took some nice pictures of the sunset. The sun had just slipped down below the water, so the colors were still bright and inspiring.

On the Rise, Lake sunset with birds

"On the Rise"
8 x 10 inches
acrylic on hardboard
ready to frame
$750.00

Went down to the lake yesterday. For the first time in over two years you can see water under the pier! Boat ramps are working and the locks are open too! The best part is that birds are everywhere by the hundreds.

I did this painting from memory, it is one of my favorite spots. The patchy area used to be under water a few years ago, and now it looks like the water is trying to cover all the weeds again.

It did my heart good to see the water level on the rise again, so I just wanted to share it.
Enjoy!

2 Egrets, wildlife, impressionism

"2 Egrets"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
ready to frame
With all the flooding and and rising streams, the birds are in heaven! It is migratory season anyway, and we get a steady stream of birds this time of year. But the amount of egrets is unbelievable! hundreds at a time! I painted just two of them here, but hope to do a flock of them soon.
By the way, Lake Okeechobee is up to it's average depth now for the first time in over two years! The pier actually has water under it now. Such a lovely site. I hope to paint it soon too.

At the Lake Again, Bald Eagle,

"At The Lake Again"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

While I was at the lake I saw this eagle on the shore. He was feasting on his catch and then he flew around for a while! I got a few pictures of him, most where blurry. But I wanted to capture the memory anyway.
I love the way the clouds are dancing around.

Sunset with Rocks, Daily Painting

"Sunset Rocks"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

This is a study of the rocks. I was fascinated with all the reflected colors. The rocks looked blue and purple! I started out just painting the colors in bold broad strokes, and thought about just leaving it that way. Then I decided to refine it and add the details, which I absolutely love to do! I painted this from photos I took last week of Nubbin's Slough.

Thanks for looking!

This painting has been altered, please see "Sunset Rocks" on 12-5-11 for updated version. Added an angel and birds. ( Interesting : the photography here is done in cool, outdoor lighting, the photography on the updated painting is done indoors with warmer light.....quite a big difference.)

Lake Sunset, Plein Air Painting

"Lake Sunset"
6 x 8 inches
Acrylic on canvas panel
(ready to frame)

Stole an hour at sunset tonight. Rarely do I get to paint on location in the evening. In fact this is the first one I have done outside at sunset! The colors were so vibrant, I really didn't do it justice. But it felt good to get out there!
This is at Nubbin's Slough. The water is coming up some, but there is still a lot of land where it used to be all under water. It has been about a year and a half now that Lake Okeechobee has been so low. I added the birds when I got home.
Enjoy!
