Nubbin's Gator, Plein Air, Impressionism

"Nubbin's Gator"

This gator is one of about five that live around Nubbin's Slough. He (or she?) is very large, at least 12 feet. He came out of the water and took a large fish up on shore and tossed it up in the air to align it and swallowed it whole! Then a little later he swam very quickly to the shore and caught a large bird before it could get away! I was stunned that the bird didn't see him. Scary!
I tried to show part of his tail in the water as he kept surfacing and you could see it -- often all you see is the head.

Nubbin's Morning, Plien Air Painting

"Nubbin' s Morning"
8x10 inches
Acrylic on canvas board
$500.00
Got to go out to Nubbin's Slough again early this morning, it is one of those places I could go to every day and find something new and interesting to paint. I just have to make myself get out of bed early-- before it is so unbelievably hot! I did this painting alla prima (all at once), before 7:45! I did another one also this morning, and I will try to post it tomorrow.

Morning's Catch, Plein Air, Daily Painting

"Morning's Catch"
8x10 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on canvas board
$350.00

This is off to the right at the Nubbin's Slough lock. The herons and egrets were catching all kinds of fish! One of them couldn't swallow a big one, he just kept trying to put his head higher until he finally got it down-- whole!
The water used to come up and splash on the rocks in the foreground . . .

Nubbin's Slough, Plein Air, Impressionism Landscape

"Nubbin's Slough"
8 x10 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on canvas board
$675.00
This is just down the road from my house. I hope to do a whole series of this area. There isn't a lot of shade, so I went out around 7:00 this morning before it got too hot. The water is still very low even though we have been getting some rain off and on. Every bit of the land shown here was under water in January.
At least this part of Lake Okeechobee isn't being dredged. Some places are digging out the black muck so the lake will come back healthier when the water levels rise again.

One Spirit, birds, Wildlife, Daily Painting

"One Spirit"
8x10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
Not Available

This is another palette knife painting. I think I am starting to get the hang of it. Just wanted to try something new. I like the interesting effects the knife creates, and the loose painterly quality.
This is symbolic for the two becoming one through marriage.

Big Lake? Plein Air, Daily Painting

"Big Lake?"

9 x12 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on hardboard
$700.00
Went down to the lake. I wanted to paint the pier, which has no water left under it at all. Last week it was a gorgeous array of new lime green grass, and bright yellow orange weeds. But now we have bull-dossers and front-end loaders all over the place. They are digging up all of the muck, and dredging out the area. It was heartbreaking! This is usually a beautiful wetland with alligators, ducks, and all kinds of birds. Now we have heavy equipment instead of wildlife.
So I went back and did this same cypress tree that I painted last December. You can really see how the water in the boat channel is almost gone. It just looks like a little stream now. Just past it is what used to be under water. Now we have grass, shrubs, and young trees starting to take over.
(See below for comparison.)
I am currently doing a series of these historical paintings of the drought.

Thanks for stopping by!

Over the Dike Too, Impressionistic Daily Painting

Over the Dike, Too
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on Watercolor Paper
(ready to frame)

I am still amazed at the low water levels of our very large lake. Lake Okeechobee is the second largest fresh water lake in the US. But now it doesn't look like much. Mud, sand and new lime-green grass everywhere. All of the bright green areas used to be under water. I am fascinated by the brilliant colors. (Click here for a comparison of this same area back in November of 2006.)

I have been doing some of my paintings on watercolor paper. I love the overall texture, but I haven't gotten used to the wavy bumps. I'll go back and straighten up the horizon line on this one.

Low Water, Impressionism landscape, Daily Painting

"Low Water"
8 x10 inches
Acrylic on watercolor paper

I painted this from memory. Lake Okeechobee is even lower now. All of this area used to be knee deep! Now the mud and grass go almost back to the horizon. Oddly beautiful. Sad and unbelievable, yet the colors of the tender new grass are so brilliant.

Over the Dike, Impressionism Daily Painting

"Over the Dike"
Pein Air painting
9x12
Acrylic on hardboard

Did this painting back in November. Lake Okeechobee looks very different now. The sand bars and the mud are everywhere. The lake hasn't ever been so low, at least not that anyone has record of. I hope I can get out and paint it soon, I've been so busy with getting final exams ready and grading final projects at school that I haven't painted much lately. I am so ready for summer! smile.

This is the same area as yesterdays painting, only just a little later in the morning. The colors got stronger as the sun rose higher, and the fog began to lift.

Easter Song, Impressionism Landscape, Daily Painting

"Easter Song"

8 x 10 inches
acrylic on hardboard
(ready to frame)
$650.00

Many times I have gone to the lake to watch the sunrise, Easter just makes it even more special. All the birds seem to be singing praises to thank Jesus for his perfect sacrifice.
I find it interesting that Easter is when the Jews celebrate Passover. What a correlation to Moses that Christ was crucified during Passover.
I also think God must have intended for us to have many gatherings and celebrations, His people had so many reasons for feasts! And they didn't just last for a day, They went on for a week or more!

Eagle Bay Again, Plein Air Landscape, Daily painting

"Eagle Bay Again"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on Ampersand gessobord
$750.00

Got to go back to Lake Okeechobee today. The wind was calm with a cool breeze now and then. Started out just lovely. I love the colors of the grass, so I wanted to try to do it En Plein Air this time instead of working from a photo. Got this one painted quickly -- before 9:00 AM! By the time I finished the second painting it got very cloudy. it seemed surreal. I was up on the dike, looking out at Eagle Bay. The other side of the dike looked totally different. Gray and silver, with rays of light shooting through. I should have packed it up, but It was only 10:30, so I started a third . . . needless to say I got rained out!
