Morning Flight, angel, knife painting

"Morning Flight"

This was a demonstration for a video lesson, but the video cut off during the session and I didn't know it. I did the whole thing thinking I was still recording!  LOL.  I went ahead and did another demo knife painting with the angel facing the other way, which recorded fine. I think this one turned out better, so I framed it up first.

I like the transparency of the angel and the soft colors. I also like the way the bottom could be sky or water.  Palette knife paintings lend themselves to abstract qualities which leaves room for the imagination. It is also fun to load up thick amounts of paint and smear it all together.

Indian Hills Morning, palette knife, plein air painting

"Indian Hills Morning"

What a beautiful day yesterday!  Wonderful cool weather, partly cloudy, and the birds singing to me!  I haven't been able to do very many paint-outs, so I was excited to get back out there.  It was well worth the drive over!  The Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast met at Indian Hills Recreational Area, in Fort Pierce, Florida.

This painting turned out great, but it was actually a failed attempt at a new technique!  I wanted to use a brush to create a dark underpainting and then add the thick knife work over the top in bright colors.  I ended up painting over the underpainting entirely, so I will have to try that idea again.  I am usually a little stingy with the amount of paint I add, so I was also working on applying generous amounts of color.  I got carried away with all the thick textures.  I did like the way the underpainting gave me a guide as I slapped more blobs of paint onto the support!

Here is the painting in progress.  The palms were off to the right of my easel.  I added some more highlights and the egret when I got home.

New Every Morning, shore line, shallow waves

"New Every Morning"
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

I just updated this little beach scene.  Originally I had painted the sides of the cradled hardboard and left it unframed, but then I found this larger cradled hardboard, which I had planned to use for a mixed media piece.  When I set the 10 x 10 inch painting next to the 12 x 12 inch unpainted board, I thought, "Wow! That might fit perfectly if I invert it..." I stained the back and painted the frame piece in the front and the sides before joining the two boards. How cool is that?  It makes a beautiful floater frame! (See the images below.)

I have become quite fond of painting on wood.  I look for patterns in the grain and use that to find the waves.  Then I layer the different effects of the transparent water.   It is exciting to see it all come together!

I measured the back precisely for where to place the hanger brackets.  They hold the whole piece together and hold the wire nicely.

Original acrylic on cradled hardboard
12 x 12 inches (including frame)
$225.00 (free shipping in the US)

ENJOY!

Along the Boardwalk, seascape, mixed media

 "Along the Boardwalk" © 2019
9x12 inches Mixed Media
SOLD

Last year I reworked this painting from a few years ago. The sea-grapes definitely needed some attention.  I enhanced the shadows and added more detail to the boardwalk and the sandy path.   I couldn't wait to add some charms and beads in the flowers! I camouflaged them really well, so they are not very noticeable until you see them at an angle.  It catches the light and then you want to look for others.  I also added a few shells.  I love the way it turned out!

I made a custom frame for it in rustic wood, which complemented the boardwalk perfectly.  (See below)

I would love to create a painting for you!
I am accepting orders for custom paintings for another week.  If you want something before Christmas we need to get started!  I will need more than a month for large paintings.

Timeless Moments, sunset beach, seashells

Timeless Moments
"His mercy endures forever." Psalm 136

Finished this painting a few months ago.  I haven't posted anything here in a long time (posting on my website and busy at work, which is a good thing).

This painting is full of thick impasto layers. I also added actual seashells, sea glass, sand dollars, and two hand sculpted clay items (a turtle in the foam, and a starfish on the shore.)  The clay items are a new element. I truly enjoyed creating them and painting them after adhering them to the canvas.  I'm using paper clay, which is clay with paper fibers added to make it stronger.  It is a lightweight clay and is something I want to explore further.

I was going through some personal issues when I painted this and thought about how somethings seem to transcend time. Some memories are as fresh as yesterday even though they happened years ago! Some things can happen in no time and seem like forever.  This led to the concept that we make time, it is in us and not just something that happens to us.  We choose to enjoy it, use it wisely, or do nothing with it.  So all of that is  flowing through this painting as the woman contemplates the vastness of it all.

I hid an angel in the sky, but not in the clouds per say, it is in reverse. The blue of the sky is in the shape of an angel by the clouds around it.  Makes it harder to find, but I wanted to make it bigger than the small ones I usually paint in the clouds.

Last Glimmer, sunlit ixora flowers

"Last Glimmer"

This is an update to an older painting of ixora flowers.   I love the way the evening sun is highlighting the leaves and some of the flowers.  I've added some beads to enhance the effect and also hid a little frog on one of the leaves.  Too much fun!

At Riverside, Egret, Palm, Indian River, Florida

"At Riverside"
(Stuart, Florida)
© 2018
Here is an older one I just love! Used some pictures I took during a paint-out at Riverside Park.  I walked all over the park for an hour in the morning, soaking in all the inspiring views before doing some sketches.

This egret was wading along the shore, and I got some pretty good photos of him catching fish.  I liked this one where he jumped up a few times.

This palm tree was one of two jetting out over the water.  The other palm was bent and crooked, but it was hard to get a good photo.

Rocky Shore, plein air, birds

"Rocky Shore"  © 2007

I recently repainted part of this older plein air painting.  (Done on location.)

The water level was very low, and the rocks made interesting patterns. It was challenging to say the least!

The little blue heron stayed off to the far right most of the morning, and just before I finished up, the water turkey (anhinga) poked his head up a few times (near the bottom).

I loved all the colors and the rhythm in this painting, but I went back and toned down some of the rocks, mostly on the left and a little near the top, in order to direct the viewer's eye toward the bird on the right.

Flaming Sunset, poinciana, impasto, Florida Art

"Flaming Sunset"

These royal poinciana trees are gorgeous, and really over painted.  Not hard to see why.
I found this old palette knife painting that needed a few more corrections (it has sat around my studio for a year or so).  I have done a lot of these, so I wanted to do something a little different this time. I built it up with gesso and impasto effects, so the raised flowers really jump off the painting! Very interesting texture and color contrast.

Royal Poinciana study, Florida art

"Poinciana Study"
Original class painting
16 x 20 inches, acrylic on canvas
SOLD

Happy New Year!

This painting was created during a class, while teaching my students how to create similar trees. We used my own photos and sketches as I demonstrated each step of the painting.

My students are encouraged to move things around, use different colors, and add extra plants or animals to their paintings. Each painting turns out very unique.

Did you know these trees also come in yellow?

Gulf Breeze, seascape, sandy shore

"Gulf Breeze"

Just finished this one this morning!  Worked on it for a few weeks. I used some of my older photos as a spring board, then moved things around for a stronger composition.  Originally wanted to keep it more impressionistic and painterly, but once again I added more and more detail.

Next Morning, Florida landscape

"Next Morning"
Acrylic on canvas board
original  8 x 10 inches
$350.00

Finished up an old one that I had in the studio for a while.  Added mist and the nice little sunlit trees in the distance.  This started as a plein air painting, but I have rearranged everything and added the pond.  Like it much better!

I'm also working on getting stronger focal points, with a nice lead into the painting.  I think I achieved that goal this time.

Over the Dike, Lake Okeechobee, Florida Art

 "Over the Dike"
9 x 12 inches,
Acrylic on hardboard
©2006     $350.00

Here is another older one of the Lake.  Below is a comparison to the same area (lock G36) when we had a drought for a couple of years.  I was fascinated with the new bright greens that showed up more and more as the water receded.  Haven't seen anything close to that since.

Great Egret, knife painting

Great Egret,  class demo
9 x 12 inches, acrylic knife painting.
(Not Available)

Donated this painting for one of our raffles for the
Top of the Lake Art Fest,
as part of a fund raiser for Okeechobee Main Street,
who puts on the show every year.

This demo painting for my adult class did not start as a knife painting.  We used brushes as I demonstrated each step.  Then I added more detail to finish it up later and got carried away with the thick chunky paint (using a palette knife) for the bark on the tree.  Did more knife work to the rest of the painting also.  But I used a brush for the soft feathers of the egret, and the flowers.  Love the contrast of the thick and thin applications of paint.

Congrats to Gloria Pitsch for winning this painting!

Healed, inspirational art, beach, girl, angel

"Healed"

Started this painting completely from memory. Made it up as I went along.  (Used reference photos of different children to free-hand the girl onto the painting.)

This is all about inner healing, accepting yourself, forgiving yourself, and letting go of the past.  But, sometimes we have to deal with the issues and do the hard work to get past it, which this painting really did for me as I struggled with my stormy past.

Lots of symbolism:  The shadow of the cross, the face of Jesus in the sand, a dove hidden in the wave near her head (for the Holy Spirit), an angel dancing in the clouds, the heart shape encircling her, and the storm moving away.

Inlet Shore, plein air, Florida landscape

"Inlet Shore"
© Fawn McNeill 2009

Challenging little Plein Air Painting (done on location) from Fort Pierce.  Little Jim's Bait Shop is located just to the right of this scene.

The wind kept blowing things over, and the lighting changed drastically several times with the clouds blowing through. Have to paint fast and stick with the plan, because you cannot keep changing the painting to keep up with the changing elements.
I like the way I captured the wind and choppy water.

The sea grapes were finished back in the studio, and the pelicans were added later as well.  There were more pelicans fishing that day than what I added to the painting.
Enjoy!

Healing Waters, stream with flowers

"Healing Waters Again"
(original class demo)

Created this for the kids summer art program last June (2016).  We used it to create knife paintings.  (This painting was not done with a palette knife.)  Students toned their canvases with base colors of browns and blues with a large flat brush first, then added colors over the top with a knife.  It was a great lesson in texture.
