Standing Tall, blue heron

"Standing Tall"

Took several attempts with this painting.  Mostly I struggled with the proportions. The neck would be too fat, or the legs too short.  Finally created a good stance and stuck with it!

The background was just plain fun. I added many layers of color and movement.  I like the contrast between the impressionistic background and the realistic heron.

The great blue heron is a huge bird.  They are almost as tall as me and their wing span looks about 6 to 7 feet or so.  They range from a pale light gray to a bluish gray.  Some of them have sienna red markings and black markings.  They are plentiful around here.  They are experts at catching fish too.  It is amazing to watch them swallow a large fish that looks like it could never fit down that neck!

Water Daze, sunset reflections

"Water Daze"

Just finished this last week. It took a while to figure out, but I wanted to capture that daydream feeling you get when you stare at the light dancing on the water. I took a bunch of pictures while we were fishing on Lake Okeechobee. The sun went behind the clouds and peeked through here and there. It was cold and windy, but beautiful.

The painting continues on the sides, so framing is optional.

Drifting, shoreline driftwood, Daily Painting by Fawn

"Drifting"

I love driftwood. It reminds me of my grandmother who collected it for her flower gardens. I painted this from some photos I took last year. I like the movement.

The mat board adds a nice texture to the water, so I used that to exaggerate the broken light on the water.

I tried to keep it loose and impressionistic, which is difficult for me.  Usually, I end up overworking a painting and adding too much detail.

Thanks for looking!
