Under Water, lily pads, mixed media

"Underwater" (Lily Pads)
© Fawn McNeill 2019

Not sure why I never updated this reworked painting. After closing my gallery from COVID, so many things ended up in storage.  I got this one out this week to show at Okeechobee Main Street.

This was originally a color scheme study in analogous greens, created years ago, from some photos I took at McKee's Botanical Gardens (in Vero Beach, FL.) I often took tons of pictures as I worked "en plein air" at paint-outs.

I was amazed at how many different hues are in lily pads!

I have gone back and removed the little snake that was resting on the lily pads (too many people objected!) Wish I had left him there, but I had fun adding more water and some beads to capture the transparency and glimmer.

Rainy Day Angels, stormy sea, oil painting

"Rainy Day Angels"
© Fawn McNeill September 2025

This site is working again, so I am going to post here and try to keep up with my website blog.  I like this format much better.

It has been a hard year, with the passing of my Son, Kyle, on March 21st, 2025.  Words cannot express the anguish and sorrow I still struggle with.

I am trying to get back to painting, so hopefully these pages will come back to life. For now, please bear with me as I post a few older works to get started.

The rain slows, and light shines through. A broken gray heart fades in the clouds. Ministering angels tend to it.  Symbolic in deep levels.  Waves of emotions take me under. Rain for tears, sunlight for hope to see Kyle again one day, and angels to remind me Father God loves me and I'm not alone.

Standing Tall, blue heron

"Standing Tall"

Took several attempts with this painting.  Mostly I struggled with the proportions. The neck would be too fat, or the legs too short.  Finally created a good stance and stuck with it!

The background was just plain fun. I added many layers of color and movement.  I like the contrast between the impressionistic background and the realistic heron.

The great blue heron is a huge bird.  They are almost as tall as me and their wing span looks about 6 to 7 feet.  They range from a pale light gray to a bluish gray.  Some of them have sienna red markings and black markings.  They are plentiful around here.  They are experts at catching fish too.  It is amazing to watch them swallow a large fish that looks like it could never fit down that neck!

Water Daze, sunset reflections

"Water Daze"

Taking pictures while we were fishing on Lake Okeechobee, the sun went behind the clouds and peeked through here and there. It was cold and windy, but beautiful.
I just finished this last week. I wanted to capture that daydream feeling while staring at the patterns as the sun danced on the water.

The painting continues on the sides, so framing is optional.

Drifting, shoreline driftwood, Daily Painting by Fawn

"Drifting"

I love driftwood. It reminds me of my grandmother who collected it for her flower gardens. I painted this from some photos I took last year. I like the movement.

The mat board adds a nice texture to the water, so I used that to exaggerate the broken light on the water.

I tried to keep it loose and impressionistic, which is difficult for me.  Usually, I end up overworking a painting and adding too much detail.

Thanks for looking!

Gotcha, realistic impressionism, wildlife, heron

"Gotcha"
© Fawn McNeill 2007

Jesus said, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." Mathew 4:19

This is a tri-colored heron. They are smaller than the great blue herons. A couple of weeks ago, he was fishing near me while I was painting on location. He didn't seem to mind me at all. I took a ton of pictures of him using his wings for shade and catching anything that came near him.
I only got about four outstanding images. I combined a couple of them for this painting. It usually takes a few months to finish a painting this size, but I worked on it almost daily. (I get extra motivated when a painting comes together right from the start!)

Just playing with reflections. Looking down at a little bobber  hiding in the shadows. Love the abstract patterns.
