Standing Tall, blue heron

"Standing Tall"

Took several attempts with this painting.  Mostly I struggled with the proportions. The neck would be too fat, or the legs too short.  Finally created a good stance and stuck with it!

The background was just plain fun. I added many layers of color and movement.  I like the contrast between the impressionistic background and the realistic heron.

The great blue heron is a huge bird.  They are almost as tall as me and their wing span looks about 6 to 7 feet.  They range from a pale light gray to a bluish gray.  Some of them have sienna red markings and black markings.  They are plentiful around here.  They are experts at catching fish too.  It is amazing to watch them swallow a large fish that looks like it could never fit down that neck!

Lead Me to the Rock, sunset, rocky shore, seascape

"Lead Me to the Rock"
© Fawn McNeill 2016
original demo

(Prints are available with or without scripture)

Did this as a demo during class, we made it up as we went along, which is challenging but fun.  Started with titanium white, cadmium yellow, and a small amount of naphthol crimson.

First, we painted the center of the canvas (mixing on the canvas), then added some naphthol crimson with white for the clouds (which needed more yellow mixed in).

Then we mixed dioxazine purple and ultramarine blue with white for a nice temperature (cool) contrast. We let it dry and then added a second layer.

The black was painted last, it has bits of orange and green mixed in.

This is a great lesson on blending and mixing. Hint: use small amounts of darker colors, as they will eat up the light colors.

Water Daze, sunset reflections

"Water Daze"

Taking pictures while we were fishing on Lake Okeechobee, the sun went behind the clouds and peeked through here and there. It was cold and windy, but beautiful.
I just finished this last week. I wanted to capture that daydream feeling while staring at the patterns as the sun danced on the water.

The painting continues on the sides, so framing is optional.

Drifting, shoreline driftwood, Daily Painting by Fawn

"Drifting"

I love driftwood. It reminds me of my grandmother who collected it for her flower gardens. I painted this from some photos I took last year. I like the movement.

The mat board adds a nice texture to the water, so I used that to exaggerate the broken light on the water.

I tried to keep it loose and impressionistic, which is difficult for me.  Usually, I end up overworking a painting and adding too much detail.

Thanks for looking!

Gotcha, Realistic Impressionism, Wildlife, Heron,

"Gotcha"

This is a tri-colored heron. A couple of weeks ago, he was fishing near me while I was painting on location. He didn't seem to mind me at all. I took a ton of pictures and got about four outstanding shots. I combined a couple of them for this painting.

Just playing with reflections. Looking down at a little bobber  hiding in the shadows. Love the abstract patterns.
