Lifting Fog, cardinal, turkey, deer, Florida art

 "Lifting Fog"

I worked on this painting off and on for a couple of years.  Just finished it in January, 2019, when I added the cardinal.  He was the whole point to begin with, so I was glad to finally put him in there!

The cardinal kept posing for me while I was scouting the area for a good place to set up my easel.  I did several small plein air (on location) studies farther down this muddy road.  I actually got my shoes wet taking photos of this old fence!

Lavender Flight, mixed media, knife painting

"Lavender Flight"

This is fun little abstract painting is part of my newest series of mixed media art.  I added some charms and beads for that extra sparkle. For some reason these mixed media paintings tickle me. I love the way the beads show up at different angles of viewing which makes it grab your attention.  (Click on the image for a larger view.)

Gentle Rain, hibiscus, mixed media, knife painting

"Gentle Rain"

A take-off from the realistic peach-colored hibiscus I did years ago, I wanted to create it with a palette knife.  But, I got carried away with the fun mixed-media ideas I have been experimenting with. (This painting is larger than most of my new mixed-media series.)

I built up the texture with thick 'heavy gesso' instead of acrylic modeling paste because it better receives the paint. I also added some aquarium stones and gems. I gave the drips of water a little extra shine, too.

Something about these fun pieces satisfies the little girl in me. They make me laugh. Maybe it's the rebellion from all the rules of creating fine art, the discovery of the right gems to embellish it, and/or just the newness of it all.

Very exciting! The colors and the sparkle are hard to see in this photo, but when the light hits the painting at different angles, they shout "Come back, look at me!" at shows, people stop, and they do a double-take.
