Inlet Shore, plein air, Florida landscape

"Inlet Shore"
© Fawn McNeill 2009

Challenging little Plein Air Painting (done on location) in Fort Pierce.  Little Jim's Bait Shop is located just to the right of this scene.

The wind kept blowing things over, and the lighting changed drastically several times with the clouds blowing through. Had to paint fast and stick with the plan, because you cannot keep changing the painting to keep up with the changing elements.
I like the way I captured the wind and choppy water.

The sea grapes were finished later, back in the studio. The pelicans were added later also.  There were more pelicans fishing that day than what I painted.
Enjoy!

Media: Acrylic on hardboard
Size: 8 x 10
Price: $800.00

Rocky Edge, shore line,watercolor

"Rocky Edge"
© Fawn McNeill 2012

What captured my attention?  The negative spaces and contrasts for sure, but originally I was attracted to the cool color temperatures in the rocks playing against the warm glow in the little bushes. I also love the contrast of the hard rocks against the soft water.
I love it when life grows in the middle of hard places.  Somehow the plants overcome the lack of soil, and they grow anyway.  Kind of like people from a cold hard life who turn out to be dynamic and inspirational even when they had very little help.

This is an original watercolor painting. I created it with many layers of professional color on acid-free paper.

Enjoy!

No More Tears, mountain path, angels, lake, fawn

"No more Tears"
© Fawn McNeill 2005

This is the last of my "drippy" series.  I did ten or so of these a few years ago. I like the contrast of the somewhat abstract background with realism added over the top.

It is symbolic on so many levels.

The most obvious comes from a Bible verse (Rev 21:4) that says He (Jesus) will wipe the tears from our eyes in heaven.

The fawn is my name sake, so it represents me on a path to better things.

The path is about choices and free will.  I have made my share of regretful journeys.

The drips and runs are all about tears and sorrow bringing about growth.  I poured my heart and my sorrows into this series for many months.  Then I got it all out and moved on!

The mountains represent the good things in life, and heading for higher places spiritually.  Better choices.

The angels in the mountains represent the spiritual battle.  One of the angels is praying, and one has a shield and sword.  They fight for us!

Using acrylics this thin jeopardizes the integrity and quality of the paint, so the finished painting must be sealed with at least 2 coats of acrylic sealer.  I prefer a semi-gloss, which I make by mixing two thirds gloss medium and varnish (Liquitex) with one third matte medium.

(I started a palette knife series with bold strong colors and thick textures after this painting.)

Size:18 x 24 inches

Healing Waters, stream with flowers

"Healing Waters Again"
(original class demo)

Created this for the kids summer art program last June (2016).  We used it to create knife paintings.  (This painting was not done with a palette knife.)  Students toned their canvases with base colors of browns and blues with a large flat brush first, then added colors over the top with a knife.  It was a great lesson in texture.

Size: 11 x 14 inches

Lead Me to the Rock, sunset, rocky shore, seascape

"Lead Me to the Rock"
© Fawn McNeill 2016
original demo

(Prints are available with or without scripture)

Did this as a demo during class, we made it up as we went along, which is challenging but fun.  Started with titanium white, cadmium yellow, and a small amount of naphthol crimson.

First, we painted the center of the canvas (mixing on the canvas), then added some naphthol crimson with white for the clouds (which needed more yellow mixed in).

Then we mixed dioxazine purple and ultramarine blue with white for a nice temperature (cool) contrast. We let it dry and then added a second layer.

The black was painted last, it has bits of orange and green mixed in.

This is a great lesson on blending and mixing. Hint: use small amounts of darker colors, as they will eat up the light colors.
