Just Dandy, wild flowers

"Just Dandy"

About This Painting:
It was a cold damp morning. While I was taking a brisk walk in Montana last year, I turned a corner and found this little field of dandelions. Wow! The sun was coming through the mist right on the wild flowers, like a carpet. It was so beautiful!

When I came across the pictures I had taken of this field, I wanted to capture that memory. I did this alla prima, or all in one session, which creates a wet-in wet look. It causes me to use thicker paint and let the colors mix right on the board. That is my favorite way to paint, but usually time doesn't allow it and I have to go back to finish up a painting. I could go back and fix a few things in this one, but I love the loose fresh brushstrokes and don't want to loose that effect.

Thanks for stopping by!

Paradise, palms at sunset

"Paradise"
About This Painting:
Here is another art lesson I did last week, I have gone back and added more details and a second palm. I like the shades of purple and pink.
This type of painting is so popular, and so fun to paint. We start with an idea from a "how to paint" book, and then we add our own colors and move things around a bit. I take my students through the painting one step at a time, and still each painting turns out different and unique!
Ready to frame.

Fishing the Edge, wildlife art, heron

"Fishing the Edge"

About This Painting:
This tri-colored heron stayed with us on the rim canal a couple of weeks ago. We were fishing along the edge and he was too! But, he caught way more than we did. He would fly up ahead a little and walk the shore. It was fun to watch him look back at us again and again, almost like he was saying, "Hey, do you mind?'
I took some photos of him, along with a huge alligator and many other birds. I may have a few more paintings of that day to work on! It was our first trip out since Robert's surgery last November. He did fine, so now if he goes out on his own I know it will be alright. (He has been known to take off fishing alone many times in the past, even though he knows he shouldn't.)
Ready to frame.

Lover's Lane, Beach Sunset

"Lover's Lane"

About This Painting:
This started as a demo, and I have gone back and added a lot of waves and sea grapes. The couple was fun to add too. The palms are from a plein air painting I did last year, only I put them by the ocean instead of the Indian River.

I wanted to get this done before Valentines, but it never worked out . . . Oh well! I like the very impressionistic feel it has, I tried not get too carried away with the detail, and keep it loose, but I tend to keep adding and fixing, so it ended up with birds, and people, and lots of wind and splash!

Little Jim's Shore

"Little Jim's Shore"
About This Painting:
This is the first painting I did Tuesday, in Fort Pierce. I had painted in some of the sea grapes while I was there, and then decided to add more when I got home. I may have over done it!!!! But I like it. I also added the pelicans, as they were everywhere!

Enjoy!

SeaGrapes, Plein air study

"SeaGrapes, Study"

About This Painting:
Went to Fort Pierce today and painted with Lori McNamara's plein air group. This is the second of two I did. It was alla prima, fast, loose and all palette knife. Too much fun. I like working on location: fresh air cool breeze, and warm sun. It was a perfect day.

Drama Queen, double hibiscus

"Drama Queen"

About This Painting:
I have been working on this large format off and on for a few months now. This is the second in a series of these large florals, but I had to put them aside before I got very far. Now that my husband is well, I am getting back to some of my goals and ambitions. Life is getting better everyday!

Painting continues on sides, framing is optional.

Be Mine, heart shaped diamond

"Be Mine"

About This Painting:
I actually painted this gem before I painted "Be Mine Again" a few days ago. But I didn't want to post this one until today, so it will show up on my DP page tomorrow, for Valentines.

This was a fun and special painting because it is symbolic of my engagement ring. I exaggerated the colors and set it all off on red.

Robert asked me to marry him on Valentine's Day nine years ago. We were walking at sunset down at the lake, as we so often did. He told me that of all the women he had known I was the only one he wanted to spend his whole life with. He had already picked out two or three rings, and we went a few days later to choose which one I wanted. The large heart shaped diamond was his first choice, so of course it was my choice too! It is a wonderful reminder of that special day.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Early Morning, misty stream

"Early Morning"

I wanted to capture the first bit of light coming through the mist. I love the morning fog coming off of the water, that is always a challenge to create. I also like the way the tree stands out. I added the flowers to brighten up the overall mood.
Enjoy!

Be Mine Again, palette knife painting

"Be Mine Again"

This palette knife painting was created alla prima ( all at once). Purple is often used for the unknown, and of course red is for passion. It was intense and I wanted to let it pour out.
No greater love can anyone give than to give up their life for us. Jesus accepts us as we are, broken, wounded, unholy, and selfish. Yet he loves us, and pursues us, and never gives up on us. He wants us for himself, and to reunite us with our Creator. Faith can heal wounded hearts, and the love you find is not like anything a human can give.

Butterfly Wishes Too

"Butterfly Wishes Too"

Wishes for love and prosperity are symbolized by the red and green in this palette knife painting. I like the way the butterfly looks like it is part of the flower.

I started with a fairly thin lay-in, with large brush strokes, but it just didn't have the same effect. So I let it dry and went over the top with thick layers of paint on the palette knife. That is when it came alive! The colors began to mix together on the painting as I added more paint and pulled the colors across each other. I enjoy this wet-in-wet application, it gets messy, but it is fun to do. Many people are amazed that I use acrylics for this, but when you use the paint thickly, it takes longer to dry and is not a problem at all.

All Wrapped Up, heart shape

"All Wrapped Up "

My Daily Painter's group is posting something for Valentines Day today so it will show up on tomorrows home page. This was fun. I like the way the lines flow as if a blanket of love is wrapping itself around the heart. I did it Alla Prima so the paint would all interact and the colors would mix on their own.

Ready to frame.

Grounded, equine art

"Grounded"

I took some photos of this mare and foal a couple of years ago. I have wanted to paint them ever since. So I finally got to it! I was attracted to the morning's back-lighting, which added tremendously to the sense of wonder that the foal seemed to have.
