Abstract Iris 3, palette knife painting

"Abstract Iris 3"

About This Painting:
I had painted a small rough draft on hardboard in acrylic before I started the large abstract "Summer Splendor" (See below). So I painted over it here to create a new one. Used a palette knife this time, and used loads of paint! I was mostly just playing around with some new color ideas.
Ready to frame.

Media: acrylic on hardboard
Size: 5 in X 7 in (12.7 cm X 17.8 cm)
Price: $300 USD

Rough draft for Endless Praise

Rough draft for Endless Praise

About This Painting:
Combined different ideas from previous paintings as I created this little study. I have touched it up some and added more color, but it was the rough idea I used to develop "Endless Praise" in a larger size. (See my last post.)
The challenge was in using a square format here, and a rectangular format for the final painting. I like having these little rough ideas to work from, as I have already worked out most of the problems and the composition comes together nicely.
Thanks for stopping by!

Endless Praise, palette knife angel

"Endless Praise"

About This Painting:
This is another commissioned painting. Combined the idea of an earlier painting of an angel kneeling with the colors of "Endless Song Too" (from a couple of weeks ago). This palette knife painting is full of texture which adds an abstract feel to the composition. I really do love all the bright colors too.
Ready to frame.

Endless Song Too, palette knife Angel

"Endless Song Too"

The format of this commissioned painting is larger than the previous painting "Endless Song," and this one is vertical instead of square.

It is actually the third palette knife painting of an angel done in this style. These are so exciting to paint, with lots of thick intense color and wonderful movement. I have already started another small one in a different color scheme and a different arrangement.

Endless Song, Palette Knife Angel

"Endless Song"

About This Painting:
This fun little painting started as an abstract, alla prima (all at once). I began to see an angel emerge out of the wonderful colors, so I had too develop it. I absolutely love all the contrasts. Dark and light, as well as cool and warm colors, it just seems to be exploding! I also enjoy creating things with a palette knife because of the texture and abstract quality.

I can imagine this angel, along with many others, joining us when we sing songs of worship. It is as if when you praise God, no matter how bad things are, you step out of the dark shadows and step into that joy-giving light.

Maybe that is what this angel was doing. Might have been doing battle on your behalf, and then turned around, into the light as the song began, mission accomplished!

Hang Over, Abstract, Palette knife painting

"Hang Over"
About This Painting:
It started as a study of split contrasts. I was just playing with the palette knife and lots of thick paint. This is a fun approach. this time it was based completely on my mood, and the mixed emotions I was struggling with at the time. Very quickly the painting began to look like flowers hanging over the water.
Because of the abstract quality it has, almost like blurred vision, I gave it the humorous title, which made me laugh.

Peeling Paint

"Peeling Paint"
About This Painting:
This painting is mostly a palette knife painting. I started it as an abstract, but as it reminded of paint peeling off of wood I added some detail lines for wood grain and cracks in the paint. Just wanted to build up the contrast of smooth wood and rough texture.
Thanks for looking!

Letting Go, palette knife abstract

"Letting Go"

About This Painting:

This palette knife painting started as a color study. It soon became a metaphor for inner struggles. I sensed the pull in my soul to hang onto things that people have done and said that hurt me, and I felt the release when I let go and forgave them. I am learning to do this right away, and not let it build over time.

This abstract painting is symbolic in many ways. The movement of the paint represents moving on, getting free from things that keep us from joy. The red and orange colors are for anger and heat, and the dark purple and black are for spiritual death that we find in unforgiveness. The white is the way of escape that Father God is always faithful to provide.

The cool colors at the bottom are the streams of refreshing we find in letting go.

By forgiving others, even when they do not ask for it, we can let go of offenses and not become resentful, which only hurts us, not them.

Be Mine, heart shaped diamond

"Be Mine"

About This Painting:
I actually painted this gem before I painted "Be Mine Again" a few days ago. But I didn't want to post this one until today, so it will show up on my DP page tomorrow, for Valentines.

This was a fun and special painting because it is symbolic of my engagement ring. I exaggerated the colors and set it all off on red.

Robert asked me to marry him on Valentine's Day nine years ago. We were walking at sunset down at the lake, as we so often did. He told me that of all the women he had known I was the only one he wanted to spend his whole life with. He had already picked out two or three rings, and we went a few days later to choose which one I wanted. The large heart shaped diamond was his first choice, so of course it was my choice too! It is a wonderful reminder of that special day.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Be Mine Again, palette knife painting

"Be Mine Again"

This palette knife painting was created alla prima ( all at once). Purple is often used for the unknown, and of course red is for passion. It was intense and I wanted to let it pour out.
No greater love can anyone give than to give up their life for us. Jesus accepts us as we are, broken, wounded, unholy, and selfish. Yet he loves us, and pursues us, and never gives up on us. He wants us for himself, and to reunite us with our Creator. Faith can heal wounded hearts, and the love you find is not like anything a human can give.

Red Rocks, sunset, beach

"Red Rocks"

Made this up for fun. I started with a thin strip of purple in the middle and worked out in both directions with rainbow colors. Then added the clouds, rocks and waves. It was painted alla prima.

Window Orchids 2, floral

"Window Orchids 2"

Got a little wild and semi-abstract with these, but I love the closer view and the thick paint! Did this one alla prima, or all at once in one session. used loads of paint and let it squish all around. Too much fun!

Ready to frame.

Violets 3, abstract flower

"Violets 3"
8 x 8 inches
Acrylic on canvas
sides are painted, framing is optional
$650.00

I loved the blue reflected light hitting the shadow side of the leaves, so this was exaggerated and then contrasted with the bright yellow and lime green from the sunlit side! I wanted to repeat the colors of the flower, so I used it in the back ground for harmony. This painting was fun to create and just flowed from the brush!

Iris Abstract, O'keeffe flower

"Iris Abstract"

8.5 x 11.75 inches
watercolor on acid free paper
Ready to frame

$475.00

I have always been inspired by Georgia O'keeffe's flowers. I thought this one would look great in watercolors. I changed the colors somewhat and let the composition flow the way it wanted as I painted it in without drawing it first. I used to have my students at the high school do this type of art history study. Of course they had to do a report too!

"Opposing Forces" palette knife abstract painting

"Opposing Forces"
Set of 2, 6 x 6 inches each
Acrylic on hardboard
ready to frame

No deep hidden message for these paintings, at least not that I am aware of. I just wanted to push around some strong colors, and take a break from representational art. So here is what came about:
I started with swirls of thick bold color, and then decided to go with cool colors playing against the warm colors. I really got lost in the moment. After I finished the first one, I decided to create its companion. They could be hung together or separately, but I am only offering them as a set.

Escape, abstract, palette knife painting

"Escape"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
$950.00
ready to frame
Lots of thoughts going through my mind. Wanted to create the feeling of a struggle or battle.
Life seems to come crashing down on us so easily, and we feel like we are going to drown in the sorrow and negative forces. But God promises a way of escape, and always makes a way for us, especially when it seems like there is no way out.
The horse symbolizes us in the storms we face. He is determined to overcome the trials, and so he does!
The light on the other side is where God made a way for us to find rest from our struggles. Jesus made that way for us.
This painting was done alla prima, or all at once. It has thick swirls of paint, applied with a painting knife instead of a brush. This technique makes some interesting and cool effects.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man, God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (First Corinthians 10:13)
