Mural in progress, horses, butterflies, angels and a bunny!

I moved the front legs farther to the left and made the neck a little shorter to give Rachel's horse better proportions. (See the image below for a comparison). I am close to getting the left side done. The sky goes across the top of the window, and the grass under the window is full of flowers and butterflies. Hard to get a good photo with the window glaring on the camera.

There is an angel in the sky above the oak tree, and a bunny in the grass, along with flowers and butterflies. Too cute! The edges will soften into the pink walls.

This is the first lay in. The colors are off a little and so are the proportions. There is an angel in the sky above the horse. Click on the image to see it closer.
This mural is 13 feet, not including the window!

This is the beginning of the right side. I think This is Rachel's Dad's horse. He is a buckskin.
I am enjoying this project. I go to the ranch house about three times a week all day. So my Daily Paintings are not getting done everyday for now. I will try to keep two or three new small works posted each week, so please keep checking back!
This is the first of 3 murals.

This is a preliminary painting for a mural I am starting next week. Rachel is one of my students and I have been commissioned to do this in her bedroom. Before it is done we will probably have bunnies and butterflies too! It will be fun.
This painting may be available for sale in a month or so.

Yielding Spirit, horse, daily painting

"Yielding Spirit"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on canvas
SOLD

This is another one for a fund raising event. I really got carried away with it and put way too many hours into it. I just got caught up in the muscles and the great disposition of this horse.

I started with five reference photos of different colored horses in similar poses. Some had their heads up and others had it down. I had to reverse some of them. Then I drew different sketches to find the right angle of the head in relation to the neck. The legs were difficult at first, as I kept getting them too fat and too short.

Next I drew the horse the size it needed to be onto paper, working out most of the problems. Then I drew it onto the canvas.

Usually this approach saves time because I can paint from my detailed drawings and not worry about things being out of proportion. But I kept changing my mind and painting things in differently than the drawing.

In the end it was worth it.

Make a Wish, equine art

"Make a Wish"
18 x 24 inches
Acrylic on canvas
Ready to frame
$1,000.00

When I was young my mother would say "Look, there is a white horse! Make a wish!" so when I see white horses I still think about making wishes.
I painted this a while ago. It started as one of the thin watercolor style paintings that I did a series of. Then I layered the thicker paint on top. Acrylics are great for many different approaches. You can change your mind all you want and it doesn't hurt anything.
I love this painting. It has a nice feel to it.

Polo

"Polo"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$350.00

This is for a fund raising event coming up. I will probably tweak it a little, but I like the over all effect.

We went to a polo game a few weeks ago, and I have been anxious to paint some of the pictures I took that day.

Out to Pasture Too, equine art by Fawn

"Out to Pasture Too"
18 x 24 inches
Acrylic on gallery wrap canvas
(painting continues on the sides, framing is optional)
$5,000.00

I have been working on this painting all week. I am getting ready for two more shows, and wanted some larger work than my small Daily Paintings. This is a repeat of a painting I did years ago. I reversed the whole composition and made the colors softer this time (which I really like). I used a different horse and used a larger canvas. I have added a blue heron instead of an alligator in the foreground. This painting has a more impressionistic quality to it as well.

Lots of symbolism: End of summer, last season of life for the horse too. Time to slow down, time to retire. The colors emphasize that.

The Promise, equine art by Fawn

"The Promise"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

This is Misty, a filly that I bought a while ago. I have painted her many times, even before I met her I had painted her in a couple of pictures. She is the mare in "The Guardian" from yesterdays post. Misty is an appaloosa-quarter horse. I no longer have horses. We have built a new house with an art studio, but now we have no land . . . Misty lives with her trainer now.

I saw a rainbow in the fog on my way to a horse show yesterday, and thought I would add it here. It was so odd and brilliant shinning in the mist. It was much larger than this one. It followed me all the way to town. It reminded me of God's faithfulness, He always keeps his word.

Small Wonders, Foal, Equine art by Fawn

"Small Wonders"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
(Ready to frame)
$775.00

This little foal is from Paddock Farms miniature horses. I am doing a show there this month, and thought I would paint a few of their amazing horses! Horses have to be my favorite subject to paint. When I was a teenager I was horse crazy, and all I would draw was horses!

Enjoy . . .

Spirit Horses, Uncle Sean, Mountain Man, by Fawn McNeill

"Spirit Horses"
(Uncle Sean)
18 x 24 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$1,200.00

This is one I just made up for fun. I have been working on it for three days. It is completely from memory. My Uncle is a true mountain man. He used to live alone up in a cabin that he had to hike to. No roads in or out. I have placed him very small in the bottom right of the painting to emphasize the vastness of the mountains and trees. By the way, he lives in Northern Idaho now and is married. Smile.
In the sky I found horse shapes appearing, so you know me, I had to go with it! The clouds are now alive with horses! That was just because when I lived in the mountains I got to ride horses with my friends. We rode everywhere bareback. All of my friends had horses, so we would get large groups and go on all day rides up to the lookout tower in the Swede range or up on Treasure Mountain (Libby, Montana). What fun that was!

Fond Memories, equine art by Fawn

"Fond Memories"
18 x 24 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$1,500.00

I created the background from memories of Libby Montana, where I stayed with my Grandmother several times. The horses are from pictures I took of horses I have known. I changed some of their colors and edited out a few of them to make the flow smoother. I have worked on this painting off and on for almost five years! I made it too abstract and lost the effect I was after, so now I have gone back to more of my style. I finished it yesterday. It satisfies me now.

Momma's Boy, Foal, Animal Art by Fawn

"Momma's Boy"
15 x 21 inches
Watercolor

This is a painting I did back in 1996! I just came across it, and wanted to show it off. I was just beginning to use watercolors and acrylics after years of painting with oils and teaching classes in oils. I felt like I had really come a long way after I finished this one. It took me weeks! I painted every hair. . . click on the image to see the detail.
I was thinking about my boys, while I worked on this. We were abandoned by their Dad. They were around ten and twelve years old. I wanted to protect them and take away the hurt, I was helpless. And yet I know we only learn by experiencing the tough things. God loves us with such an intelligent love, turning the hard things around for good. This Bible verse really spoke to me:

"Can a woman forget her suckling child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you." Isaiah 49:15

Winning Time, Equestrian Art, Daily Painting by Fawn

"Winning Time"
11 x 14 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$875.00  Framed (see below)

Painted this from a photo I took at the rodeo here in Okeechobee. We have 2 big events each year, and some smaller ones also.

Started this painting at the beginning of this week, but I didn't get much time to work on it. I enjoyed playing with the abstract background, and contrasting that with the realistic horse and rider
. I also like the determined look on the girls face.

Class Clown, Horse Portrait, Impressionism

"Class Clown"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
NOT AVAILABLE

I just couldn't resist this little character! He kept turning his head back to see me. This was a much harder view than I anticipated. I finally got all the angles right to make his head look like it was tipping . . . He had the most curious eyes and long, long lashes! Enjoy!

Hope and Joy, Horses, Mare and foal, Realistic impressionism

"Hope and Joy"

I love the soft textures of fur and the glow of warm colors in this small painting. The miracle of a new life and the closeness of a protective mother give this painting many implications. Even the names of the horses imply a touch from our Father.

Heaven's Touch, seascape, horse and girl, 30 x 40

"Heaven's Touch"
30 x 40 inches
Acrylic on Gallery wrap canvas
(sides are painted)
$5,000.00

Detail:

I have been working on this painting off and on for almost a year now. It is all about contrasts and texture, as far as the technical aspects go.
This painting is far reaching too. Emotionally we all have things that need healing. Sometimes a sunrise or a sunset, a cup of coffee with a friend, or a moment of silence can touch us deeper than anything else at that time. This painting combines some of those ideas: dreams I have had, horses I have ridden, prayers cried out from the depth of my soul in my most turbulent times. Always God reaches out and heals the hurt a little more.

Meek and Powerful, Stallion, Abstract, Realism

"Meek and Powerful"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas board
$575.00
unique custom frame

I like the contrast between the abstract background with the realistic stallion. A friend of mine breeds paints, This is one of her studs. Some of her horses have one or even two blue eyes.
Meekness is not the same as weakness. This stallion willingly submits his energy and power to his master. All of that is harnessed and used for remarkable feats. It is the same for living a Christian life.

Cool Down, Horse, impressionism, Daily Painting

"Cool Down"
9 x12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

I have worked on this painting a little every day this week. I have had so many interruptions that I wasn't sure I would ever finish it! I got up early this morning and stole a couple of hours!

I was studying the effects of the light and of the wind. I kept trying to show both. Florida gets miserably hot, and then the wind picks up and the rain clouds roll in. The animals head to the barn. But just before the sun hides behind the clouds there is a wonderful array of contrast on everything. That is what I was trying for, but I didn't capture it until this morning.

Enjoy!
