One of Linda's Angels, palette knife painting

"One of Linda's Angels"

I believe we all have lots of angels looking out for us. Linda must have hundreds, because she was in a terrible wreck that she should not have survived. Her car was crushed by a big truck.

This painting is a reminder of the power of God to touch our lives and heal us, we just have to ask.

Enjoy!

The Cave, hidden cabin, plein air at EdenLawn

"The Cave"

About This Painting:
From a paint-out at EdenLawn, in Jensen Beach. This little cabin is nicknamed "the cave" because it has always been overgrown with trees and plants. I love the blue door and the way the cabin is hidden in all the foliage.

Eden Lawn was originally a pineapple plantation. Then it was a place to rent cabins, with a pool and a fancy restaurant. Now it is under renovation, and has some very interesting old houses and cabins.

At the Park, plein air, Florida art, lilies, great egret

"At the Park"

Had wonderful paint-out in Fort Peirce today -- Everything was bright and colorful. It was my first time out in a few months. A cool breeze, warm sunshine, lilies blooming, and all kinds of birds posing right in front of me.... Got a lot of great pictures while I painted this scene. Totally enjoyed myself.

Thanks for looking!

Cypress Shores 2, Florida landscape, wildlife, great egret

"Cypress Shores 2"

This started as a study of the cypress trees again. I love the negative spaces in the trees. They remind me of Christmas ornaments. I got a few good pictures of this great white egret as it kept flying ahead of our boat while we were fishing a few days ago. We went out in the evening this last time.

I wanted to use a brush instead of a knife this time. I tried to exaggerate the impressionistic look of the brush work in the clouds and the trees, and the water, and still get it to look fairly realistic.

This painting is composed from memory mostly. I made up the clouds, used my photos for the tree line, and used the photos of the egret to add him in last. I love working this way, free-handing the whole thing as I go. Leaves lots of room for changes and imagination.

Cypress Shores, landscape, egret and alligator, knife painting

"Cypress Shores"

Painted this palette knife painting from memory. It is from a fishing trip we went on last week. There were so many birds and alligators that I just had to add some, but the painting was really about the interesting shapes the cypress trees made with the morning sky showing through them.
The palette knife texture is thick and the colors are strong, I also like the way the contrast turned out this time.

Bear Side, fall scene, mountain landscape

"Bear Side"

About This Painting: Tried another palette knife painting on gallery wrap canvas. The painting continues on the deep sides, so framing is not needed.

Painted this one from memory. When I get to go back home to visit my family in Montana and Washington State, I take lots of pictures, especially if we go up in The Rockies. My older brother lives near Glacier National Park now, so I love staying at his house!

Instead of using my photographs, I just made this one up as I went along. It was fun to change, add, and rearrange things until I found this composition, which I think is very strong because of the diagonal lines and the bright colors. I added the little bear near the tree line because I always see deer, or bear, or something, every time I go back!

Early Fall, mountain landscape with a stream

"Early Fall"

This painting started as a palette knife demonstration, then I added more details and color when I got home. The palette knife is perfect for water because it creates a sparkling effect. Let the paint dry and gently add the bright color over the top and the texture underneath grabs the bright colors....really fun to do.
Enjoy!

A little Spring, landscape with a natrual spring

"A Little Spring"

About This Painting:
From a painting demonstration for my kid's summer class. I added more detail when I got home. The lesson was on a limited palette. The kids each got to choose a color scheme. (This was my older group.) It was hard for them at first, but once they figured out they could add white and they could get grays, browns and blacks by mixing the colors together, then it became very fun! I love to see the light bulbs turn on as they try new things.

Thanks for looking!

As Winter Ends, spring landscape

"As Winter Ends"

About This Painting:
This is a fun little painting with lots of flowers and the promise of warmer weather! The last time I was up north in the spring time, so many trees had flowers all over them!  This is a wonderful memory for me. This painting is also a match to "Summer's End."

Eagle Bay Palm, plein air landscape

"Eagle Bay Palm"

About This Painting:
This is a plein air painting (out on location) that I did a few years ago. Eagle Bay is a large marsh next to Lake Okeechobee and it hooks up to the rim canal. Usually you can see lots of wildlife all around this area. I liked the way the palm tree just stuck out of the top of all the brush. I have just gone back and added more highlights, and some egrets too.
Ready to frame.

Smokies, mountain landscape, knife painting

"Smokies"

About This Painting:
Painted from pictures I took in the Smokey Mountains. We were up about 3,000 feet. I was amazed at all the colors even though it was foggy. The palette knife gives this painting a very rugged and wild feeling, which is exactly what I had hoped for!

This is an older painting that is up for bid. I painted this from photos I took on Arbuckle Creek. Everything was so bright and sunny that day, I wanted to try to capture it. Good memories.

Spoonbill, plein air landscape

"Spoonbill"

About This Painting: Went out to the Adams Ranch for an annual artist's day paint out. This is one of the many natural springs that flow through the ranch. The water is clear and very turquoise. this photo doesn't pick up the colors in the painting very well, but the blues are a little more of a greenish hue.

I added the spoonbill when I got home, I had seen it flying overhead while out painting, way too cool! (Spoonbills have a shorter neck than flamingos, and they range from white and soft light pinks to dark pinks, almost a red color, and sometimes they have yellow accents too. Very strange-looking bird, with a flat duck-like bill. Very pretty colors though!)

The painting continues on the sides which are close to 2 inches thick, so framing is optional.

Little Stream, landscape with wildlife, alligator and heron

"Little Stream"

About This Painting: Added the wildlife to this older painting after I saw this gator swimming beside our boat down in the Everglades a few months ago. That was the closest I have ever been to a gator!

I wanted a little more realism also, so I repainted some of the trees and water.

Ready to frame.
