Spilling Over Again, abstract, mixed media

"Spilling Over Again"

This is a take off from an older abstract painting called "Spilling Over." It is part of a new series of mixed media paintings.  This one has aquarium stones, beads, and tiny pearls.

I'm experimenting with adding found objects and/or impasto techniques (thick raised texture to paint over.)

I did some of this in college, but that was a few years ago....

Starting small, and learning so much about gel medium, heavy gesso, and acrylic modeling paste!  Way too cool.

This one is framed in a black shadow box.

Mixed media
5 x 7 without frame
8 x10  overall dimensions

Second Look, Florida art, plein air

"Second Look"
© Fawn McNeill 2011

This is the third painting I did at the Adams Ranch on location a few years ago. I had packed up most of my gear, and then looked back at this view from the other side of the path before I loaded up my easel. I was tired and ready to leave, but it was so beautiful, and I wanted to at least get this one started. So I went back and unloaded everything! Got a great lay-in, and almost finished it on location...... I touched up a few things and added a little more detail when I got home. I love the way it turned out!

Enjoy!

Rocky Shore, plein air, birds

"Rocky Shore"
Fawn McNeill © 2007

I recently repainted part of this older plein air painting.  (Done on location.)

The water level was very low, and the rocks made interesting patterns. It was challenging, to say the least!

The little blue heron stayed off to the far right most of the morning, and just before I finished up, the water turkey (anhinga) poked his head up a few times (near the bottom).

I loved all the colors and the rhythm in this painting, but I went back and toned down some of the rocks, mostly on the left and a little near the top, in order to direct the viewer's eye toward the bird on the right.

Flaming Sunset, poinciana, impasto, Florida Art

"Flaming Sunset"

These royal poinciana trees are gorgeous, and really over painted.  Not hard to see why.
I found this old palette knife painting that needed a few more corrections (it has sat around my studio for a year or so).  I have done a lot of these, so I wanted to do something a little different this time. I built it up with gesso and impasto effects, so the raised flowers really jump off the painting! Very interesting texture and color contrast.

Spring Shoreline,colorful morning

"Spring Shoreline"
(original demo)
11x14 inches
Acrylic on canvas

This was the first of 2, painted this past April.  I created it as a guide, then did the step-by-step painting during class for the second one.  Lots of strong colors, which I love to paint.

The challenging part was getting the waves to curve on the beach,  but every one captured it nicely.  Each painting turns out unique and different, as I encourage my students to move things around and use their favorite colors.

$250.00, ready to frame

Soul Searching, sunset, beach, Florida art

"Soul Searching" © 2018 by Fawn McNeill

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find;
knock and it will be opened to you."  Matthew 7:7

(A heart-shaped cloud, and angels)

(The woman)

This large painting was done mostly from memory. I think it is more of a skyscape than a seascape. I added the lone woman on the beach to suggest times of reflection and questioning. She also implies the vastness of it all.

I actually saw a heart-shaped cloud in the sky recently, so I added it to suggest the amazing ways that Father God sends reminders of his love for us. This is especially true for me when I am struggling.
Most of the time we miss it.  He sends so many people and remarkable things our way, so if we do ask, or search, we can find Him. He wants to bless us and help us, but we must ask and receive it! (He will not force his ways on us.)

Royal Poinciana study, Florida art

"Poinciana Study"
Original class painting
16 x 20 inches, acrylic on canvas
SOLD

Happy New Year!

This painting was created during a class, while teaching my students how to create similar trees. We used my own photos and sketches as I demonstrated each step of the painting.

My students are encouraged to move things around, use different colors, and add extra plants or animals to their paintings. Each painting turns out very unique.

Did you know these trees also come in yellow?

Maggie Mae, yellow labrador, animal portrait

"Maggie Mae"
24 x 30 inches
Acrylic on canvas
SOLD

In  memory of Maggie.  Combined different images to put this custom painting together.  The rocks were very challenging! Wanted them to look just like the rocks on her wall.  So many wonderful contrasts: soft fur and hard rocks, pink azaleas and green grass... Yellow butterflies for added accents, just love co-creating custom orders with my clients!

Chloe and Sweetie, macaw and green-cheek parrot

"Chloe and Sweetie"

So excited to finally get to post this!  It was a custom painting for a Christmas present, so I didn't want to spoil the surprise!

Used different photos of these two, and combined them into one setting.  Had to figure out the size relationship between them... Love the colors and simulated textures.

New Hope, Brahmans, cattle, Florida Art

"New Hope"
© Fawn McNeill 2015

Painted this a couple of years ago, but didn't get to post it because I couldn't get a good image of it.  I  wanted to make it available in prints, so I tried again. (This painting includes a unique custom frame.)

I actually took pictures of this calf peeking around a tree.  The mother was a little farther away.  Took a lot of nice images of different cows and bulls as well.  Next, I sketched out some ideas before drawing this composition onto the canvas.  I added water and mist to the background for that foggy morning haze that is so common around here. The flowers add the feeling of spring, a time for new life and hope.

I Am, true immortal, Jesus

"I Am"
20 x 24 inches
Acrylic on canvas

By far the most challenging thing I have ever painted.  More than a year of work, and many tears went into this painting.

I kept thinking about the focus of Halloween: fear, death, blood, the un-dead, etc....  I thought about the one who brings love, life, forgiveness, joy, and restoration.  I'm not talking about religion or rules or tradition.  (I'm talking about the man who gave us two commandments: Love God Almighty with all your mind, heart and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself.) So I wanted the focus to be on him!

"Very Truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I Am!"  John 8:58

Rough Water, Pelican, Wildlife, realism

"Rough Water (Pelican)"
©FawnMcNeill 2004
11 x 14 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
SOLD

I created this painting quite a few years ago-- from some photos I took at the Fort Pierce inlet. It began as a palette knife painting. But then I got into the brush work applied over the cool textures that the knife made. I love the hard rocks against the feathers, and all of that against the moving water. Nice contrasts. Added lots of details.

Gulf Breeze, seascape, sandy shore

"Gulf Breeze"

Just finished this one this morning!  Worked on it for a few weeks. I used some of my older photos as a spring board, then moved things around for a stronger composition.  Originally wanted to keep it more impressionistic and painterly, but once again I added more and more detail.

Rock Wall, mini mural, stones, faux finish

Acrylic Mural

I've wanted to paint rocks on the wall, above my counters, for years!  So this summer I finally did it!
I love the colors and the texture, but most of all, I love the way it actually tricks the eye to look like real stones piled up on each other.  The wall was already textured, so that helped with the illusion.

Prints are available:
7 x 10 inches, matted to 11 x 14 for easy framing
$45.00 (includes shipping).

Email me: fawn@fawnsartstudio.com

Here is how I started.  The far right side was the hardest to reach:

I removed the switch plates and sanded them with sand paper to roughen them up some, then I primed them with gesso, so the paint won't be as apt to peal.  You can see how I matched the left one into the mural below.

Red oxide, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, white, black, and yellow oxide turned out to be the colors I used the most.  I used Liquitex Basics (not the Matte series). I kept the paint moist with a small spritzer bottle of water, misting a little bit more often instead of a lot all at once, so as to not make puddles.  Used a palette knife to paint some extra texture now and then, also used a crumpled paper towel for some of the texture.  Had to leave it alone and let it thoroughly dry between coats before painting over the extra texture or it would just take the paint off.  The textured wall made it easy to add more texture, and I didn't need much.  It also made it interesting, trying to use it to enhance the rocks.  I kept my shadows consistent with the light source of the window, giving the rocks some depth.

This took me a week, 3 or 4 hours every time I had a chance.
Approximately 25 hours

Rise and Shine, dairy cows and deer at sunrise

"Rise and Shine"
©2014

Bright sunlight is breaking through the cool morning shadows. This painting is symbolic of a new start: putting off the old and walking in the light. It is about overcoming depression and finding joy again.

When my boys were small, I would wake them up singing "Rise and shine and give God the glory, glory. . ."

I created this painting for the new year quite some time ago. I lived on Rucks Road.  Rucks Dairy was just around the corner. I took lots of photos and did some plein air studies too. Good memories.
