Waiting, Impressionism Landscape, Bird

"Waiting"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas board
SOLD
While I was out painting yesterday morning I took some good pictures of this great blue heron. He was hard to see at first because he did not move at all. I thought he was just a rock!
I really got lost in all those rocks, just kept adding more and more thick paint. It was fun.

Partly Cloudy, Daily Painting, Palms

"Partly Cloudy"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

I did this painting from memory. It is really fun to just make it up based on previous plein air works, and previous studies. This is from my back view again. I have done these in different color schemes, and at different times of the day. Depending on which direction I look I get a different set of palms. I really like the way this one has turned out. The sun is coming through all the clouds, and the birds are headed out toward the lake (which is on the other side of the dike.)

Red-bone Portrait, Daily Painting

"Red-bone"
8 x10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

This little pup reminds me of a hound dog my boys had when they were little. They called him Copper-top.

Sandhill Cranes, Impressionism birds, wildlife

"Sandhill Cranes"
8 x 10 inches
acrylic on hardboard
Sold

These birds mate for life, and around here you see the same pair raise their two chicks in the same area every year. Usually one of the chicks will not survive. The young sandhills will stay with their parents for a year or so.
This family stays near the big lake. The last time I painted a scene at the lake, they came very close and sang up a storm! They have bright red tufts on the top of their head, and they have a beautiful ruffle of feathers on their rump. I took some great photos -- this is painted from those photos.
Sometimes Sandhills are very brownish gray, and sometimes they are a very light bluish grey.
I have seen them in large flocks of more than a hundred birds! I guess that is when they are migrating.

Class Clown, Horse Portrait, Impressionism

"Class Clown"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
NOT AVAILABLE

I just couldn't resist this little character! He kept turning his head back to see me. This was a much harder view than I anticipated. I finally got all the angles right to make his head look like it was tipping . . . He had the most curious eyes and long, long lashes! Enjoy!

Double Time, Floral, Hibiscus, Daily Painting

"Double Time"

This is a double hibiscus. I was drawn to the varying colors and great lighting. I did this alla prima with lots of thick paint. Too much fun.

Lock Closed, Historical Plein Air, Drought

"Lock Closed"
8 x 10 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on hardboard

This morning I painted the boat channel, which has been closed most of this year. The water used to come up around the rocks. Every bit of the grass here was covered in water. Now the little puddle on the right is barely ankle deep. The tall grasses near the middle of the rock way are taller than a person while standing on the rocks.
This is the same area that I painted last November: "Over the Dyke."
Then I painted it again after the drought had set in,

Great Blue, realistic impressionism, heron,

"Great Blue"
9 x 12 inches
(Ready to frame)
Acrylic on canvas board
(canvas mounted on archival hardboard)

This is a take off from a painting I did in May called "Hidden Truth." I zoomed in closer and used a different photo for the bird. I wanted a great blue heron instead of a white egret. I reversed the whole setting but still kept the lighting from the right. Worked in thin dark layers first, then added the thick bright colors and details. I like the strength of this composition: the heron is off center, and the shadows behind him set him off.

Hope and Joy, Horses, Mare and foal, Realistic impressionism

"Hope and Joy"

I love the soft textures of fur and the glow of warm colors in this small painting. The miracle of a new life and the closeness of a protective mother give this painting many implications. Even the names of the horses imply a touch from our Father.

Blue Cypress Lake, re-worked, Impressionism Landscape

"Blue Cypress Lake"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

This is another painting that I wanted to brighten up and add some birds. It was originally created in March. Now I have strengthened the reflections and the foliage. I especially like the birds. They seem to fit right in.

Boom Boom Boom!, Floral Plein Air, Bromeliads

"Boom Boom Boom!"
5 x 7 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on hardboard

This is a tribute to Lori McNamara, who does wonderful plein air palette knife paintings! I must say it was exciting, messy, and fun! This is my first one on location using only a knife. My previous knife paintings were done in the studio from my own photos.

These bromeliads remind me of firecrackers, such an explosion of bright color.
