Fierce Beauty, American Lion

"Fierce Beauty"
© Fawn McNeill 2019

I was excited about creating all the fur up close with thick textures. That was my original inspiration.
The eyes were in shadow and hardly showed up in my photos of this Florida panther. I love painting eyes, so I couldn't resist and really played them up here. No matter where you go in the room they follow you!

The painting continues on the sides, framing is optional.
This painting was reworked/enhanced in 2019.

Media: acrylic on gallery wrap canvas
Size: 20 in X 20 in (50.8 cm X 50.8 cm)

Sweet Summer Memories

"Sweet Summer Memories"

About This Painting:
After painting this little landscape I just couldn't resist adding the tire-swing in remembrance of all the fun at many different swimming holes with a rope or a tire swing over the water! usually it was up on a higher hill than this. I remember a group of kids pushing each other, and 2 or 3 trying to jump on the swing at the same time! Someone usually got pushed in or fell off.
Ready to frame.

Letting Go, palette knife abstract

"Letting Go"

About This Painting:

This palette knife painting started as a color study. It soon became a metaphor for inner struggles. I sensed the pull in my soul to hang onto things that people have done and said that hurt me, and I felt the release when I let go and forgave them. I am learning to do this right away, and not let it build over time.

This abstract painting is symbolic in many ways. The movement of the paint represents moving on, getting free from things that keep us from joy. The red and orange colors are for anger and heat, and the dark purple and black are for spiritual death that we find in unforgiveness. The white is the way of escape that Father God is always faithful to provide.

The cool colors at the bottom are the streams of refreshing we find in letting go.

By forgiving others, even when they do not ask for it, we can let go of offenses and not become resentful, which only hurts us, not them.

At the River

"At the River"

About This Painting:
This is from Silver Springs Florida. It was morning, I thought the reflections were just lovely. Birds where everywhere. I like the impressionistic style of this painting. I wanted to try to capture that magical feeling you get when you know you are experiencing God's presence through His creation.

Painted Paint, A paint horse up close

"Painted Paint"
About This Painting:
This was inspired by Kathy Papasso's painting called "Bull's Eye" which I have always thought was an exceptional painting (see my side-bar for her work).

I wanted to capture the texture and close feel of the fur, but the eyes quickly took over to become the focal point. I used two pictures of Paint Horses, and two of Thoroughbreds for references. Then I free handed the drawing onto the canvas before I began painting it. It has taken over a month to finish it.

Oak Study, Plein Air Painting

"Oak Study"

About This Painting:
I went to the coast and painted with my plein air group today. (Worked on location outside.) This old oak blew over years ago. The way it grew back interested me because of its very graceful shape. If I use it for a larger painting I will add a muddy bank and some water and a rope swing hanging over the water, now that sounds fun!
Ready to frame.

Size: 10 in X 8 in (25.4 cm X 20.3 cm)

Garden Stream

"Garden Stream"

About This Painting:
I started with the palette knife, but got to adding more detail with a brush. This painting was not working out so well at first, so I reworked it for a better composition. This was done by toning down some of the bright colors that were in the foreground. That pushed the focal point onto the red flowers in the middle ground, which is what I wanted. I also added more sky in the trees. I just love the stained glass effect that came about in the trees.

Ready to frame.

Purity, palette knife floral

"Purity"

About This Painting:
This little palette knife painting was done alla prima, or all in one session. This causes the thick paint to mix colors in interesting ways, as the paint is applied wet over wet. This technique is fast and fun to do. I also love the abstract quality and the texture that it creates.
Ready to frame.

Wildflower Clusters

"Wildflower Clusters"

About This Painting:
These wildflowers out by the fence really caught my eye. I was interested in the variety of bright colors. Pink, orange, yellow, and white all right next to each other. I used the dark background to set it all off.
The painting continues on the sides, no need for framing.
