Heavenly Highlights, Southern sunset, landscape with livestock

"Heavenly Highlights"

This large painting took almost 9 years to create!  It was in progress when we where building a new house, and we also had three major hurricanes that year.  It ended up in storage two different times.  I got it back out from time to time and added more details.   

Originally it was full of downed trees and devastation from the storms.  I saw this sunset just after the first hurricane came through, and was inspired to paint it, but then I was not happy with the broken trees and littered landscape.  Each time I got it out I added more growth and life to it.   Finally I liked it.  My husband loved it and said I should display it, so I signed it and stopped adding more to it!

Sunrise Beach, Seascape with palm, demo painting

"Sunrise Beach"

Have done this one as a class demo a couple of times, always love it.  Added the palm tree this time, and more clouds.  My students are encouraged to use more pink or orange if they want a sunset instead of sunrise. Of course it could be either.

Morning Chatter,fox squirrel in a tree

"Morning Chatter"

This large fox squirrel had more to say than I wanted to hear!  He would not stop scolding me as I walked around under this tree.  Clearly I had invaded his space.  I finally got a few pictures of him before I moved on.

Cypress Shores 2, original landscape with egret, impressionism

Created this from photos I took on the boat.  Robert and I went on a fishing trip down the rim canal near J & S fishing camp. I exaggerated the brush strokes to make it more impressionistic. Really love that style.  Framed this one in a custom-made, hand-painted frame (see below).

Flowers, Class Demo, red violet flowers

This was a fun lesson.  We used the bright green to set off the deep red-violet.  These complementary colors create another level of contrast than simply using dark values against light values. We also looked at using thick impressionistic strokes and not over blending the colors.

Gentle Song Too, waterfall, palette knife painting

"Gentle Song Too"

This painting is all about contrast.  I like the contrast of the light and dark values, but the cool and warm tones make a different kind of contrast too. I am also intrigued by the contrast of the flowing and moving water against the harsh rocks. The palette knife lends itself well to the abstract look of the rocks, and it emphasizes the movement in the water too.  It was originally created in 2010, but I have gone back and added more details.

This is a custom painting.  Had fun playing up the background and reflecting it in Jack's fur.  Jack's humans are in the movie industry, so I thought this would reference theatrical lighting quite nicely!

Down Stream, pasture, cattle, palms, Florida art

"Down Stream"

Did this painting entirely from memory.  I've seen many places similar to this.   I wanted to create a strong contrast along the bank and added the fence to break it up.  There is also a gator hiding in the water.

4 Winds Ranch revised, sunrise, pasture, calf

"4 Winds Ranch"

Made a few corrections and added the little calf to this older painting.  I also added more detail to the trees and the moss.  This was originally done very impressionistically with loose brush strokes.  I was interested in the shadows and patches of sunlight with the mist in the background.    I took lots of pictures. It was a beautiful morning!  See below for frame.
