"Breezy Morn"

Re-posting this older demonstration painting because I just added more detail and the great white egret.  I felt like this painting needed some life!  I also love the back-lit foliage.  During the painting class, I stressed the importance of irregular shapes in the clouds and the bushes.  Any time you can repeat similar shapes it creates rhythm and harmony in a composition.  Notice how the shapes in the clouds are repeated in the bushes that are back-lit!

Waves, Pacific Ocean, seascape

"Waves"

(original class demo painting)

Created for my adult painting classes.  Added the tree for more interest.  This one came from an art instruction book, only it was a night scene and we did it with daylight colors to brighten it up.

The curve of the wave is a challenge to capture, so sometimes we end up with more rocks and splash than transparent waves!

Breezy Evening, Florida art, palms and sunset

"Breezy Evening"

This demonstration painting is a take off of "Breezy Morning."  Changed the colors, reversed the composition, added some palm trees, and also formatted it vertical instead of horizontal.  This is a great example of how you can jazz up those photos that didn't turn out so great.  Add dark shadows and strong highlights for more contrast and change some things to strengthen the composition.  

I may still add some birds . . .

This is an older one from a few years ago.  Started going through my inventory and decided I would rather they go to good homes at lower prices than sit on my shelf!

When I created this one I revisited an older painting, completely changing it by using a knife. I really enjoy using such intense colors!

Plein Air painting

Got to do a paint-out a couple of weeks ago, at White City Park (Fort Pierce, Florida).

I was drawn to this gator laying on the bank, and then a smaller one swam toward me!  There were birds everywhere, and of course the bottle brush trees were in bloom.  It was a lovely spring morning.

Sun Down, sunset seascape, knife painting

This is an older painting, from my Daily Painting series when I was a member of Dailypainters.com.  (This is when I first started painting with palette knives.)  It is full of strong color and thick textures, which I still love to create. Painting with knives leads to unique mixtures of color, which is fun to experiment with.

Late Morning, lake with egrets

This painting came from my own photos taken at a little lake just north of Sebring, Florida. 

It is an original painting that I created while teaching an art class. The lesson was on depth and distance.  We used atmospheric perspective to exaggerate the distance.  I went back later and strengthened details and the shadows, and then added the birds to finish it up.

Stormy Evening, sunset beach knife painting

"Stormy Evening"

This is an original palette knife painting.  Sometimes I take a break from my serious detailed work and put tons of paint out on the palette. I load the painting up thick using a palette knife instead of a brush to get all kinds of interesting mixtures and texture.  This is very exciting and moves quickly.  When they don't come together with the desired results I scrape all the paint off and try again. In most cases I do them alla prima (all at once), but this time I didn't have time to get it all finished and went back later to add the final details. (Added birds and some of the palm tree with a small brush.)
