Water's Edge, daily painting by Fawn

"Water's Edge"
6 x 6 x 3/4 inches
Acrylic on cradled hardboard
(painting continues on sides)
$300.00

Saw this plant one day while I was out painting en plein air. I was taking pictures of some birds and saw these little flowers glowing in the sun. They stood out so nicely against the water. I painted this from one of those photos.

New Day, Atlantic sunrise, Daily painting

"New Day"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on canvas
SOLD

I painted this from photos I took at the beach. I love to get up early and watch the sunrise. No people are around, and everything is quiet. The colors range from pastels to dark shadows. It is so surreal.

Storm Watch, abstract art

"Storm Watch"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
NOT AVAILABLE

Just goofing around today. This type of painting is fun to do, just put down colors and see where it takes me.

I started with a rainbow type of layout, and then just started pulling colors together. I lost the yellows in the red and green, but thought it looked like grass, so then I added more grass.

The rocks started showing up with reflected lights, which I thought was too cool, so I added more purple in the shadows to strengthen them.

The water looked like an ocean right from the start, so I added the waves to make the storm surf.

The sky changed about three times, and when the dark shadows showed up I thought it was perfect for the way the grass was so blown about.

Lavender Dreams Again, Daily Painting

" Lavender Dreams Again"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
SOLD

This is the fifth in a series I started back in July 2007. I love painting from my imagination. This is completely from memory.

Yellow is symbolic for joy, and purple is symbolic for the unknown or spiritual things. So this painting combines both of those ideas.

This is a commissioned painting. If you see a painting you want to have that is not available, I can do something similar. Just email me for current prices.

Simple Faith, Wildlife Art by Fawn

"Simple Faith"
24 x 30 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$2,000.00

The painting was created in 2003 as part of a drippy series. I began with thin washes of acrylic paint on a canvas. Then the great blue heron was added in thick opaque paint. I like the abstract feel of the background against the detail and realism of the heron. The whole painting is then sealed three times.

The drips and runs are symbolic of tears and sorrow. The heron is symbolic of rising above rough times and trusting God to see you through it all. He promises to use trials for our ultimate good.

Inner Beauty, Orchid #4

"Inner Beauty"
(War Paint Orchid #4)
6 x 6 inches
Acrylic on canvas
SOLD

I started very abstract and then got more impressionistic and painterly with lots of nice brush work. But as I was drawn into the center of the flower I began to refine the painting more. It became a tedious and all absorbing thing, I guess I got lost in it for a while. That is a great experience, kind of like a day dream that you don't want to come to an end.

The painting continues on the sides of the canvas, and the staples are on the back. I like that because it makes framing optional.

At G-36, Plein Air painting

"At G-36"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
ready to frame
$650.00

Haven't been out on location in quite a while. I know there is probably a neat name for this area of the levee, but the sign just says G-36. The lock in this area is still closed, the lake is still too low. The canals and creeks are filling up, but not the lake.
It was too windy today so I only did one painting, then I packed up. At one point the painting actually blew off of the easel and onto the palette! No harm done, it missed the blobs of paint, just scratched it a little and I touched it up.
This is a palette knife painting, lots of thick paint and lovely texture.

Enjoy!

War Paint Abstract

"War Paint Abstract"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
$400.00
(ready to frame)

This is my palette from the war paint orchids. Before I completely mucked up the whole palette I stopped using it and started a new one so this one would keep the colors of the orchids. I thought it would make a nice painting on its own!
I used Acra Violet and Acra Crimson, as well as Cadmium Red Medium. Next, I used Cadmium Yellow Light and Cadmium Yellow Medium along with Phthalo Green and Green Deep Permanent. I also used Ultrmarine Blue and of course white.
I used a brush to apply the paint to the canvas so in some places the colors got lost. Before it dried I used my palette knife to finish up the edges and join the colors where there were blank spaces. so besides being used as a palette it then also becomes a new painting. This is a fun way to experiment with color.

War Cry, orchid

"War Cry"
6 x 6 inches
Acrylic on canvas

This is the third painting of the War Paint orchids. I explored the realism first, so then I was comfortable with a more expressive approach. I love painting with thick loose brush work. This is alla prima, and has a nice abstract feel to it. I may do this one in a much larger format.
Tell me which style you like best!

War Paint, orchid, still life by Fawn

"War Paint"
5 x 7 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on hardboard
$400.00
My husband grows orchids. He used to have 15 or so healthy plants, but after hurricanes and moving to a new place, he has about three left. This war paint is in full bloom right now. I was so taken by it's varying shades of purples and reds (contrasting with all that those lovely greens) that I just had to paint it. hopefully I will do a few more before it stops blooming. I love the graceful movement of these flowers.

Angel, Spiritual art by Fawn

"Angel"
5 x 7 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
Not Available

This is based on a dream that I had. The wings of the angels were not visible, just blurs of light. The rays of light came out in all directions. I also had a vision once where the angels were moving about quickly, and all you could see was a flash of light, like a moving orb. In that vision the angels where waiting and listening to The Father, whom I could not see. They would each take off as they were given a command.
This painting was done with a palette knife, to give it that abstract or expressionistic quality. It only symbolizes an angel, as often times they appear as people and we never even know they were sent from God to help us.

The Snack Bar, egret, heron, wildlife art by Fawn

"The Snack Bar"
5 x 7 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
SOLD

Some people call the great egret a 'great white egret,' and some people call the blue heron a 'great blue heron.' Either way they are very large birds and very common around here. They are close to four feet tall, and have a massive wing span. I take pictures of them often and love to include them in my paintings.
This painting was done alla prima, which means I did it all at once. I love the using thick paint with fast applications. That gives it that wet in wet look, which in acrylics is harder to achieve than in oils.

The Promise, equine art by Fawn

"The Promise"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

This is Misty, a filly that I bought a while ago. I have painted her many times, even before I met her I had painted her in a couple of pictures. She is the mare in "The Guardian" from yesterdays post. Misty is an appaloosa-quarter horse. I no longer have horses. We have built a new house with an art studio, but now we have no land . . . Misty lives with her trainer now.

I saw a rainbow in the fog on my way to a horse show yesterday, and thought I would add it here. It was so odd and brilliant shinning in the mist. It was much larger than this one. It followed me all the way to town. It reminded me of God's faithfulness, He always keeps his word.

The Guardian, Spiritual art by Fawn

"The Guardian"
30 x 40 inches
acrylic on canvas
NOT AVAILABLE

This was an assignment at the university a few years ago. We were challenged to create a symbolic self portrait with a still life set up.

The broken fawn is glued back together. It represents my broken life of abuse and foster homes, as well as the abandonment from my first husband of 13 years. God just keeps putting me back together!

The horse statue is colored the color of a horse I owned at the time, and represents the love I have for animals.

The hat is my wedding hat, and it is for the joy and love that Robert Barr has brought into my life.

The shells and rocks are from places I have lived, California, Minnesota, Montana, Hawaii, Guam, Florida . . . I moved every year as a kid, sometimes changed schools two or three times a year. So I would pick up something small that I could keep from many of those places.

The wild flowers are because my boys, Zac and Kyle, used to pick weeds and wild flowers out of the back yard, which always needed mowing. They always wanted me to put them in a vase, which I did, even if they didn't smell so great. Those are really good memories.

The rose is a promise of the Almighty's faithfulness to cleanse us from our wrongs and to cleanse us of the wrongs that were done to us. Somehow as a child I thought that the evil done to me made me evil. But God has shown me that we are like roses that do not wither or die. Our spirits are eternal. When we trust in Christ our lives become unique in him. Our Creator pursues us with his love. Only He makes us righteous in our spirit so we can be with him.

The angel means busines! He is for my belief that God must give us each many mighty warrior angels to help us through this sin cursed world! I believe they fight for us regularly. Because of Christ we are able to keep forgiving, loving and trying. We no longer have any excuse to give up. (By the way, my younger son, Kyle, draws warrior angels and he let me use one of his drawings for this angel. I added the serious face, and Kyle posed for the holding of the sword.)

I love this painting. I love the colors, the details, and the powerful meaning it has for me personally.

Full Spectrum, Abstract, Daily painting by Fawn

"Full Spectrum"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
$500.00

This is another split primary palette. (See the side bar for a link to color tips.) I used a hardboard this time and placed my colors all around. Then as I mixed colors on it for my paintings it started to remind me of an abstract painting. I see angels and demons fighting in this one, but it could be flowers or waterfalls too. That is the cool thing about abstracts, you can just let your mind run with it.

This little foal is from Paddock Farms miniature horses. I am doing a show there this month, and thought I would paint a few of their amazing horses! Horses have to be my favorite subject to paint. When I was a teenager I was horse crazy, and all I would draw was horses!

Spirit Horses, Uncle Sean, Mountain Man, by Fawn McNeill

"Spirit Horses"
(Uncle Sean)
18 x 24 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$1,200.00

This is one I just made up for fun. I have been working on it for three days. It is completely from memory. My Uncle is a true mountain man. He used to live alone up in a cabin that he had to hike to. No roads in or out. I have placed him very small in the bottom right of the painting to emphasize the vastness of the mountains and trees. By the way, he lives in Northern Idaho now and is married. Smile.
In the sky I found horse shapes appearing, so you know me, I had to go with it! The clouds are now alive with horses! That was just because when I lived in the mountains I got to ride horses with my friends. We rode everywhere bareback. All of my friends had horses, so we would get large groups and go on all day rides up to the lookout tower in the Swede range or up on Treasure Mountain (Libby, Montana). What fun that was!

Fond Memories, equine art by Fawn

"Fond Memories"
18 x 24 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$1,500.00

I created the background from memories of Libby Montana, where I stayed with my Grandmother several times. The horses are from pictures I took of horses I have known. I changed some of their colors and edited out a few of them to make the flow smoother. I have worked on this painting off and on for almost five years! I made it too abstract and lost the effect I was after, so now I have gone back to more of my style. I finished it yesterday. It satisfies me now.

Sweet Dreams, Surrealism, Spiritual Art

"Sweet Dreams"
24 x 24 inches
Oil on canvas
Not Available

This is a painting I did back in 1995. I was in my early thirties then. I had always struggled with nightmares most of my life. They were usually about the abuse I endured in my childhood. As I went through more counseling, I began to ask Jesus to heal my sleep. This was the first of many good dreams. It smelled wonderful. The wind was gentle and it was blowing the fragrance of the flower all around me. The path was moving with the petals, making it hard to move forward. It lead toward heaven in the center. I woke up feeling refreshed and at peace. I have had very few nightmares since then. I can even sleep soundly through most things now!

Snowy Egret, wildlife art by Fawn

"Snowy Egret"
24 x 30 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$1,200.00

This is a painting I started last year while I was still working at the high school. I am trying to finish up some of my older works so I can move on to new things.
This little egret is very flashy. He has bright yellow-orange feet and bright yellow around his eyes. I saw him land on these rocks and knew I had to paint him. I played up the contrast of the soft white feathers and the rough harsh rocks. I blurred out the background to make it have that oil painting look. Again I wanted to push the soft against the hard for contrast. I like the overall effect.

Returning Thanks, Sunset, Heron, wildlife art by fawn

"Returning Thanks"
30 x 36 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$2,500.00
Ready to Frame

This is one I did a few years ago. It is part of a series of about ten paintings I did with very thin paint, letting it run and drip like watercolors. Then I added details in thick paint after the runny layers dried.

I quickly painted the thin acrylics onto the wet canvas and let it run to symbolize the rain and a sunset. In my paintings the rain is often for tears and growth. The sunset represents the end of a season or time in life.

I have learned that it is through the hard things that we become truly thankful. We begin to see the whole picture and know the trials bring about stronger faith and greater appreciation.

This Great Blue Heron is symbolic for a prayer of thanks, even in the midst of trials.

"All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his purpose."  Romans 8:28
