Healing Waters, stream with flowers

"Healing Waters Again"

(original class demo)

Created this for the kids summer art program last June (2016).  We used it to create knife paintings.  (This painting was not done with a palette knife.)  Students toned their canvases with base colors of browns and blues with a large flat brush first, then added colors over the top with a knife.  It was a great lesson in texture.

Lead Me to the Rock, sunset, rocky shore, seascape

"Lead Me to the Rock"

original demo

(Prints are available with or without scripture)

Did this as a demo during class, we made it up as we went along. Started with titanium white, cadmium yellow and a small amount of naphthol crimson. First we painted the center of the canvas (mixing on the canvas), then added some naphthol crimson with white for the clouds (which needed more yellow mixed in). Used dioxazine purple and ultramarine blue with white for a nice cool contrast. We let it dry and then added a second layer. The black was painted last, it has bits of orange and green mixed in.  This is a great lesson on blending and mixing. Hint: use small amounts of darker stronger colors!

Poured Out, waterfall, knife painting, class demo

Created this painting with palette knives with my students.  Knives are harder for little hands to paint with, but the interesting textures and colors are exciting for them to discover.  It was a tough project, but we had great results!

Mountain Air, river landscape

"Mountain Air"

This painting had a rough start.  It was only half finished as a demo.  The class was large, so I didn't get a chance to do much in the way of demonstrating.  Played around with it a few more times, adding snow, a cabin, and some fog.  I got carried away with the rocks and the water, working over them a few times.  The large tree in the foreground was taken out and added back twice.  Clouds were strengthened and eagles added too.  I made it available in print a while ago, but forgot to post the original.

Angel lake, sunset

"Angel Lake"

Original demo © 2011

This painting started as a class demo.  Went back later and added stronger colors, and more detail along the shore line.  Added the angel in place of the sun. I also gave it more contrast by darkening the foreground tree.  

I'm posting it again, in honor of my Mother-in-law, Dorothy Barr, who just went to meet Jesus.  She was 98! I miss her.

Have done this one as a class demo a couple of times, always love it.  Added the palm tree this time, and more clouds.  My students are encouraged to use more pink or orange if they want a sunset instead of sunrise. Of course it could be either.

Flowers, Class Demo, red violet flowers

This was a fun lesson.  We used the bright green to set off the deep red-violet.  These complementary colors create another level of contrast than simply using dark values against light values. We also looked at using thick impressionistic strokes and not over blending the colors.

Breezy Morning, wildlife, great egret, landscape

"Breezy Morn"

Re-posting this older demonstration painting because I just added more detail and the great white egret.  I felt like this painting needed some life!  I also love the back-lit foliage.  During the painting class, I stressed the importance of irregular shapes in the clouds and the bushes.  Any time you can repeat similar shapes it creates rhythm and harmony in a composition.  Notice how the shapes in the clouds are repeated in the bushes that are back-lit!

Created for my adult painting classes.  Added the tree for more interest.  This one came from an art instruction book, only it was a night scene and we did it with daylight colors to brighten it up.

The curve of the wave is a challenge to capture, so sometimes we end up with more rocks and splash than transparent waves!

Breezy Evening, Florida art, palms and sunset

"Breezy Evening"

This demonstration painting is a take off of "Breezy Morning."  Changed the colors, reversed the composition, added some palm trees, and also formatted it vertical instead of horizontal.  This is a great example of how you can jazz up those photos that didn't turn out so great.  Add dark shadows and strong highlights for more contrast and change some things to strengthen the composition.  

I may still add some birds . . .

This painting came from my own photos taken at a little lake just north of Sebring, Florida. 

It is an original painting that I created while teaching an art class. The lesson was on depth and distance.  We used atmospheric perspective to exaggerate the distance.  I went back later and strengthened details and the shadows, and then added the birds to finish it up.
