Monet's Cliffs, impressionism seascape demo

"Monet's Cliffs"

My kid's class choose this for our focus on art history, we didn't have time to add the women or more sailboats....but it was still very fun to challenge my students with a new way to paint. Some of them did not care for it at all and went back and smoothed out all the brush stokes! Others loved it and added more thick paint and broken strokes. I only gave them primary colors (plus white and black), so they had to add a little blue to the yellow to get shades of green, and I didn't let them mix the colors first, they had to mix it on the painting by overlapping the brush strokes! After a while some of my kids started mixing it first anyway. I laughed and told them that was fine, at least they tried it.....

Started as a demonstration from one of my student's photos. The photo was dark, so I brightened the whole thing up while we painted it. After I got home I decided it had great potential, so I changed some of it and added a shore line, more details, and darker reflections. Love the depth and distance, as well as the peaceful feeling it has.

Old Timer, wildlife, grizzly bear

I saw a similar bear in Montana, but didn't get pictures of him. So when I was at a zoo shortly after that, I took lots of pictures of this bear in in a pool. I used my Montana pictures for the background. I added extra water, and lots of furry texture (which I love).

God's Grace, palette knife angels

"God's Grace"

This was for my daughter-in-law's birthday. My son, Kyle, is in the Airforce, in Afghanistan, and he had to leave his wife and new baby girl a couple of months ago. I painted the three angels to symbolize God's care for each of them. I titled it "God's Grace" because my new grand-daughter is named Kylynn Grace.

Late Winter, palette knife landscape

About This Painting:
This was actually a class demonstration, then I repainted it as a palette knife painting when I got it home. I added the palm trees and the reeds along with the birds after I built up the texture with a knife. I was thinking about the day I spent at the Adam's Ranch a couple of weeks ago. We get fall colors in the winter here in Southern Florida. So the colors of winter are still prevalent, even when the warmer spring weather arrives.

Second Look, plein air Florida landscape

This is the third painting I did at the Adams Ranch a little more than a week ago. I had packed up most of my gear, and then looked back at this view from the other side of the path before I loaded up my easel. I was tired and ready to leave, but it was so beautiful, and I wanted to at least get this one started. So i went back and unloaded everything! Got a great lay-in, and almost finished it on location...... I touched up a few things and added a little more detail when I got home. I just love the way it turned out! They don't all go so well.

This is the right side of the path I posted last week. The spring actually runs all the way around the little hill in that painting (End of the Road).

End of the Road, Florida landscape with natural springs

"End of the Road"

Plein air painting I did at the Adams Ranch for Saturday's paint-out. The water actually runs all the way around the little hill. These natural springs are all over the ranch. Some of them have a sulfur smell to them, but this one didn't. The kite birds kept swooping down in front of me, and I was able to get some pretty good photos of them. It was cool and breezy too. What a perfect morning!

Summer Sunset, lake demo landscape

"Summer Sunset"

Fun little demonstration for one of my art classes last week. It was a study on trees and water. I darkened the shadows and added more detail yesterday.

Many of my demos end up sanded down and painted over so I can re-use the board for the next class, but sometimes they just need a little more time and detail to be a very nice finished piece. I have started using my professional paints and materials when I do demos, instead of the student grade paints and supports. This gives me the option to touch them up and offer them for sale, or use them for fund-raisers and gifts.

This painting is a demo I did for one of my after-school classes. It was fun helping 8 and 9 year olds learn to paint with a knife! I added more details a few days later.

About This Painting:
One of my favorites. Lots of symbolism here. The cattle are a memory of the horse's old job. He's headed for the shade of the trees to rest and enjoy the day. The end of summer is for the last season of life. The peaceful glow in the water and the hidden bird is for the new life that is found after this one.

I was inspired from a camping trip; I went for an early walk and came across this scene.  I combined several pictures of this area to get a stronger composition.

This is an award-winning painting.  It continues on the sides, so framing is optional.

Went back and strengthened the shadows and some of the colors in this older painting, and added the doe. Always felt like something should go in the opening. I originally painted this one from pictures I took out painting on location. There were lots of deer in the area, but my photos of the deer didn't turn out very well. I created this doe from memory.
