End of the Road, Florida landscape with natural springs

"End of the Road"

Plein air painting I did at the Adams Ranch for Saturday's paint-out. The water actually runs all the way around the little hill. These natural springs are all over the ranch. Some of them have a sulfur smell to them, but this one didn't. The kite birds kept swooping down in front of me, and I was able to get some pretty good photos of them. It was cool and breezy too. What a perfect morning!

Summer Sunset, lake demo landscape

"Summer Sunset"

Fun little demonstration for one of my art classes last week. It was a study on trees and water. I darkened the shadows and added more detail yesterday.

Many of my demos end up sanded down and painted over so I can re-use the board for the next class, but sometimes they just need a little more time and detail to be a very nice finished piece. I have started using my professional paints and materials when I do demos, instead of the student grade paints and supports. This gives me the option to touch them up and offer them for sale, or use them for fund-raisers and gifts.

Painted this one a while ago from photos I took at the Fort Pierce Inlet. It was early morning, the wind was blowing so hard that the gulls could hardly fly at all. It reminded me how God helps us rise above the turmoil of life and always gives us a chance to start over with each new day.

Palette knife painting of the Rockys in Montana. Every time I go home to visit, I take tons of pictures. I enjoy reliving the memories each time I paint them. This painting is a demo I did for one of my after-school classes. It was fun helping 8 and 9 year olds learn to paint with a knife! I added more details a few days later.

About This Painting:
One of my favorites. Lots of symbolism here. The cattle are a memory of the horse's old job. He's headed for the shade of the trees to rest and enjoy the day. The end of summer is for the last season of life. The peaceful glow in the water and the hidden bird is for the new life that is found after this one.

I was inspired from a camping trip; I went for an early walk and came across this scene.  I combined several pictures of this area to get a stronger composition.

This is an award-winning painting.  It continues on the sides, so framing is optional.

Went back and strengthened the shadows and some of the colors in this older painting, and added the doe. Always felt like something should go in the opening. I originally painted this one from pictures I took out painting on location. There were lots of deer in the area, but my photos of the deer didn't turn out very well. I created this doe from memory.

Took pictures of this great egret on a foggy morning while I was at Lake Okeechobee. We were in a drought and the grasses and weeds had taken over. This whole area was usually under water! I was attracted to the contrast of the orange bushes and the green grasses.

Frosted Palms, Florida landscape

"Frosted Palms"

About This Painting:
We have had some hard freezes already this winter. On this particular morning, my car was iced over, and I don't even own an ice scraper to remove it from my windshield. I had to put the defroster on high heat to get a hole big enough to see through!

I saw this scene early that morning while driving just north of Okeechobee City, near Fort Drum, which is south of Orlando in the middle of the state. It was truly amazing! For the first hour of my drive everything was frost covered, and then the sun began to break through the patches of fog. Then everywhere the sun hit was a bright orange, and all the shadows were sparkling blue from the ice.

I used to live in Montana, so ice is not strange to me, it is just strange to see it on palm trees in Florida!

About This Painting:
This is another one I did on watercolor paper. It is a harder support to work on, but nice for framing because it can be easily matted and put behind glass, even trimmed some if needed.

I painted the landscape from memories of Guam. We always had fantastic sunsets with intense colors. I added the angel for wishes of Joy.

Been out of town a lot lately, so I am posting this one from when I first began doing my daily studies. I still paint most everyday, but not as many small studies. I am doing more commissions and larger paintings based on these small ones.

Did this one years ago. I used to sit here by the Kootenai Falls, in Libby Montana and watch the water roar. There is a swinging bridge that is very scary to cross just down stream from this spot. Sometimes I really miss my family and the beauty of the mountains.

It took me months to paint this large realistic painting!

The Cave, hidden cabin, plein air at EdenLawn

"The Cave"

About This Painting:
From a paint-out at EdenLawn, in Jensen Beach. This little cabin is nicknamed "the cave" because it has always been overgrown with trees and plants. I love the blue door and the way the cabin is hidden in all the foliage.

Eden Lawn was originally a pineapple plantation. Then it was a place to rent cabins, with a pool and a fancy restaurant. Now it is under renovation, and has some very interesting old houses and cabins.
