Water Daze, sunset reflections

"Water Daze"

Taking pictures while we were fishing on Lake Okeechobee, the sun went behind the clouds and peeked through here and there. It was cold and windy, but beautiful.
I just finished this last week. I wanted to capture that daydream feeling while staring at the patterns as the sun danced on the water.

The painting continues on the sides, so framing is optional.

First Time For Everthing, foal running

"First Time for Everything"

Got great pictures of this new colt running around the paddock his first time out. He had a hard time getting here, and his mother almost didn't make it. One of the foal's legs came through the rectum and the other got hung up backwards.  The mare could not move around very well after being sown back together. They were kept in a stall until she could walk some.

When he took off bucking and running around, she would call him back each time.  He would catch his breath and then take off again! It was way too cool to watch. He lives next door to me.

I was mostly interested in the backlighting and how it set him off.  The dust kicking up was also something I wanted to try to capture.  I exaggerated the background and moved things around to create more contrast because the sunset blurred so much of it out.  I think it is one of my best works!

Make a Wish, landscape with white horse

"Make a Wish"

This is just one of the wonderful scenes along Arbuckle Creek, near Sebring, Florida. I have painted many pieces from my photos of this area.

I added the white horse as a tribute to my mother, who always told me to "Quick make a wish on that white horse!"

I hid an opsprey flying out of the tree, and an anhinga sits on a limb in the water.

Montana Rockies, mountain landscape with eagles

Just finished the final touch-ups on this palette knife painting. I absolutely love the way the knife creates interesting textures for the illusion of rocks and snow! I painted this from pictures I took during my last visit to Glacier National Park.

Hershey, horse portrait, miniature foal

Created from photos my client sent to me. We changed the background to her color choice, and changed the pose slightly to create a better stance. Hershey is the foal of a miniature horse.

White Ibis with Lilies, wildlife art

"White Ibis with Lilies"

Painted this from photos I took at White City Park last year. Quite a challenge to paint the negative spaces and leave the ibis. I get into a slow and methodical state of mind when working with watercolors, totally the opposite of acrylics.

Art Show

Had a rough start, spilled coffee all over my shirt first thing in the morning, before the show began. Can you believe that I didn't even think to bring an extra one? Will have to add that to my list for next year......

Anyway, I went in the bathroom to take off the outer shirt thinking I would leave my white tank shirt on that I had underneath..... But the worst of the coffee was on the undershirt. So I took off both shirts and rinsed as much of the stains out as I could, and wore the cold and wet shirt (on my right side) that you see in the picture above. Then I hung the white tank-top shirt up in my car.

I did have a jacket I wore for a little while. Thank Goodness I wasn't set up out in the cold windy morning!

How embarrassing!

The rest of the day went well, and I even won a ribbon. It is not a first place, or is it? It is called The Parrish award, in honor of Grady Parrish, who selected an artist each year for environmental awareness in their art. It came with a nice cash prize as well, so I was happy!

Back to the studio!
