May Flowers, mixed media, bees

This little painting has charms and beads added to it.  The original photos came from pictures I took on a misty morning with all the wild flowers  lit up from the sun peeking through.  The beads and bumble bees came later when I wanted to have some fun with it.

Enjoy!

Mountain Rush, waterfall, knife painting

"Mountain Rush"

I have done this scene as demonstration paintings a few times. This one I decided to go back and rework the entire painting with palette knives.   This makes it unique and more interesting as it becomes full of new color mixtures and thick textures.  Knife paintings are a little harder, especially if I want details and realism, so I have to remind myself to keep it suggestive.  I do use tiny brushes for the extras (like the eagle).

I wanted to use knives because of the rough texture of the rocks, which a palette knife renders very nicely.

Morning Splash, beach, seascape, watercolor

"Morning Splash"

I painted three of these (three tries), each a little different. (See below for how I tried to fix the sand on the first one.)  I was practicing different ideas for the sand and ended up liking the use of a tooth brush over a fan brush because the grain of the sand turned out smaller and a little easier to control.

Watercolors are a little more difficult for me because mistakes are harder to correct.  With acrylics, I can paint over things and change my mind as often as I want.  I usually start over with watercolors if it does not capture my intended effect.  In this series, I did salvage the two that I was not as happy with, and I ended up with three nice paintings.  The one featured below has a little more depth with the extra sand dune.

A note about framing: Artwork on paper should be framed behind glass with a mat around it to keep it off of the glass and protect it.  This includes photographs and prints on paper.  Those on canvas or wood should not be framed behind glass.  Original oils and acrylics are usually done on canvas or wood and need to breathe.  If artwork or photograph is done on paper or mat board it should be framed behind glass with a mat to keep the image off of the glass. (Glass can trap moisture and ruin the image.)

Spring Breezes, seascape with flowers, knife painting

 "Spring Breezes"
Original palette knife painting

This was started as a video lesson, but when I went back to finish it later I decided to add the flowers blowing in the wind.  I love the thick impasto effect of the knife work in the flowers. It was fun to use more paint than usual and challenge myself to leave it alone and not detail it out!

Enjoy!

Indian Hills Morning, palette knife, plein air painting

"Indian Hills Morning"

What a beautiful day yesterday!  Wonderful cool weather, partly cloudy, and the birds singing to me!  I haven't been able to do very many paint-outs, so I was excited to get back out there.  It was well worth the drive over!  The Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast met at Indian Hills Recreational Area, in Fort Pierce, Florida.

This painting turned out great, but it was actually a failed attempt at a new technique!  I wanted to use a brush to create a dark underpainting and then add the thick knife work over the top in bright colors.  I ended up painting over the underpainting entirely, so I will have to try that idea again.  I am usually a little stingy with the amount of paint I add, so I was also working on applying generous amounts of color.  I got carried away with all the thick textures.  I did like the way the underpainting gave me a guide as I slapped more blobs of paint onto the support!

Here is the painting in progress.  The palms were off to the right of my easel.  I added some more highlights and the egret when I got home.

Along the Boardwalk, seascape, mixed media

 "Along the Boardwalk" © 2019
9x12 inches Mixed Media
Acrylic on canvas
SOLD

Last year I reworked this painting from a few years ago. The sea-grapes definitely needed some attention.  I enhanced the shadows and added more detail to the boardwalk and the sandy path.   I couldn't wait to add some charms and beads in the flowers! I camouflaged them well, so they are not noticeable until you see them at an angle.  It catches the light and then you want to look for others.  I also added a few shells.  I love the way it turned out!

I made a custom frame in rustic wood, which complements the boardwalk perfectly.  (See below).

I would love to create a painting for you!
I am accepting orders for custom paintings for another week.  If you want something before Christmas we need to get started!  I will need more than a month for large paintings.

Spoonbills Feasting, mixed media, wild flock, Florida art

"Spoonbills Feasting"
© Fawn McNeill 2019

This is an older painting that I have revisited by painting more details and adding some bling.  I also put in a new frame.

Here is what I wrote about it a few years ago:
This was an amazing site! I have seen spoonbills at zoos, but this is the first time I have seen them in the wild. The evening sun was shining on them and the pink feathers were just dancing all around. I tried to capture it from memory, because I forgot to take my camera!

I added beads and aquarium stones for more interest.  I enjoy the reflected light on the objects.

New Display

With everything shut down these days, just when I have a new series of mixed media art I want to share, I have decided to rent a small space at Unique Boutique in Okeechobee Florida.  It has been a really good experience for me. I am looking forward to making more of these fun creations available!

Original Mixed Media

A few years ago, I did some plein air studies during a drought at Nubbin's Slough.  This experimental painting came from those studies.  Here I used paper-clay for the rocks.  (Paper fibers are added to the clay for more strength).  These hand sculpted rocks have a cool looking 3-D effect.  I also enjoyed building up the weeds with gel medium to create interesting patterns of texture.

I hid some angels in the sky and used tiny brushes for the distant birds and extra details.

Wild Angels, egrets, stream, knife painting

"Wild Angels"
© Fawn McNeill 2007

This is an older painting that I always loved.
The morning that I took pictures of this stream, some of the foliage and mist looked like large beings. As I painted it, they began to look like angels. So I had to emphasized them.

I just put this painting in a new custom frame. (See below)

Just Breathe, seascape sunset

"Just Breathe"

This painting has been through 3 phases over a few years.
First it was just a calm sea with soft sunset colors and a few clouds.  Then I added stronger colors and more detail, including bigger waves.  Finally, I added the girl and decided it was finished!

Enjoy

At Riverside, Egret, Palm, Indian River, Florida

"At Riverside"
(Stuart, Florida)
© 2018
Here is an older one I just love! Used some pictures I took during a paint-out at Riverside Park.  I walked all over the park for an hour in the morning, soaking in all the inspiring views before doing some sketches.

This egret was wading along the shore, and I got some pretty good photos of him catching fish.  I liked this one where he jumped up a few times.

This palm tree was one of two jetting out over the water.  The other palm was bent and crooked, but it was hard to get a good photo.

Lifting Fog, cardinal, turkey, deer, Florida art

 "Lifting Fog"

I worked on this painting off and on for a couple of years.  Just finished it in January, 2019, when I added the cardinal.  He was the whole point to begin with, so I was glad to finally put him in there!

The cardinal kept posing for me while I was scouting the area for a good place to set up my easel.  I did several small plein air (on location) studies farther down this muddy road.  I actually got my shoes wet taking photos of this old fence!

Art Show

Had a great show at the end of January! (Been so busy that I didn't get a chance to post it.)

Showed some of my new mixed-media series, and some of my older originals. I  had such a large variety going on that I didn't think I would be in the mix to win an award.  Often times judges like to see a coherent body of work.

I sold some art, won a blue ribbon, and shared my testimony to many who asked about the meaning behind the paintings.  It was an awesome day.

Thank you Lake Placid Art League!  It was encouraging to be so well received by so many people!

Here are some pictures, Enjoy! (Click on an image to enlarge it).

Merry Christmas, Tree, mixed media

Christmas Tree,
Original Mixed Media,
 on canvas, 14 x 18
SOLD

A little late, but I was very sick over the past week, didn't get to post these...
I did feel better on Christmas morning, and was so very thankful to get to enjoy my family!

Added lots of glitter paint on the ornaments.  I am enjoying the way they stand out when the light hits them a certain way.  My students are loving it and coming up with some amazing ideas!  I find myself joining them and feeling like a little girl as my youngest children get so excited when we start adding the extra bling.

Hope you had a great Christmas, and that your new year is full of love and many blessings!

Enjoy!

Second Look, Florida art, plein air

"Second Look"
© Fawn McNeill 2011

This is the third painting I did at the Adams Ranch on location a few years ago. I had packed up most of my gear, and then looked back at this view from the other side of the path before I loaded up my easel. I was tired and ready to leave, but it was so beautiful, and I wanted to at least get this one started. So I went back and unloaded everything! Got a great lay-in, and almost finished it on location...... I touched up a few things and added a little more detail when I got home. I love the way it turned out!

Enjoy!

Rocky Shore, plein air, birds

"Rocky Shore"
Fawn McNeill © 2007

I recently repainted part of this older plein air painting.  (Done on location.)

The water level was very low, and the rocks made interesting patterns. It was challenging, to say the least!

The little blue heron stayed off to the far right most of the morning, and just before I finished up, the water turkey (anhinga) poked his head up a few times (near the bottom).

I loved all the colors and the rhythm in this painting, but I went back and toned down some of the rocks, mostly on the left and a little near the top, in order to direct the viewer's eye toward the bird on the right.

Flaming Sunset, poinciana, impasto, Florida Art

"Flaming Sunset"

These royal poinciana trees are gorgeous, and really over painted.  Not hard to see why.
I found this old palette knife painting that needed a few more corrections (it has sat around my studio for a year or so).  I have done a lot of these, so I wanted to do something a little different this time. I built it up with gesso and impasto effects, so the raised flowers really jump off the painting! Very interesting texture and color contrast.
